Most expensive art piece sold for a living artist

Sotheby's NY to offer Jeff Koons'

Just because it’s the most expensive piece of art ever sold by a living artist - at 23.6 million, yup you heard it..

It’s hard to believe that a gigantic heart made of steel would sell for 23.6 million. My first question is: Who can afford that? Second: Where would you put it? Don’t get me wrong I actually like some of Jeff Koons’ artwork, but not so much on the gigantic heart. Well, what can I say… go Jeff go.

Lions and tigers and ... elephants? Oh My!

Posted Friday, May 9, 2008 at 10:11AM
Remember Dumbo? Remember Babar? What about that really awesome hot pink elephant? The ThisNext users are showing the love for all things elephant. With all these neat elephant items (ranging from cute to ummm…I didn’t even know things like that existed) you should be able to satisfy that craving for those wrinkly giants with trunks.

SpringDesign Contest Winner

Posted Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 11:38AM
barocco.jpg Our SpringDesign contest wrapped up this week. Thanks to all who submitted so much awesome design, whether it be fashion, furniture, garden gear, or office supplies. Difficult as it was to face, there did, of course, have to be one winner. Randomly chose, this Maisons du Monde Barocco headboard, chosen by shirleytemple, emerged as the winner. This bold, ornate headboard offers a seductive reminder that serious bedroom design transcends seasonal trends.

As announced earlier, the winner will receive two Philippe Starck-designed Toy Armchairs, one Plant Frame, and one Eva Solo Bird Feeder.

Great recommendation shirleytemple, and congratulations!

Political Product Wars

Posted Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 11:05AM

I won’t say who we are voting for …. but I will say that the political products on ThisNext are going head-to-head.  From Obama chocolates to Hillary nut crackers, the ThisNext community is nuts (hahaa) about political products.

For the Obama fans (see all 53 items tagged “Obama”) …

For the Clinton lovers …

Oh yeah, sorry McCain … the ThisNext community really doesn’t have anything for you except for this lousy tee-shirt.

Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition
In my last post about GTA IV, the battle between the previous winner, Halo 3, and the  latest installment of the Grand Theft Auto series was ramping up to be a massive clash of the video game titans.

Well, the results of the first week are in, and with every one in multiple industries looking, it looks like GTA 4 has hit it out of the park.

From Next-Gen
According to publisher Take-Two, Grand Theft Auto IV sold approximately six million units globally with an estimated retail value of more than $500 million in the first week. The game sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.

It’s also made massive sales figures in Australia and the UK

The article from Next-Gen continues to say:
Grand Theft Auto IV’s first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date.

Patricia Field for Diet Coke

Posted Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 11:51AM

A mircale happened yesteday … I went all day yesterday without caffeine, which for me was pretty impressive. Now I am suddenly having a craving for Diet Coke, not because I miss it (I don’t) it’s because this bottle is freaking fly!

Patricia Field has designed these sweet limited edition bottles for Diet Coke.

Patricia Field explains: “The ‘diet Coke’ City Collection captures today’s modern women, confidant, glamorous, sexy and more in charge of their own lives, and represents the areas of life that are most important to them such as: ‘career’, ‘passion’, ‘love’ and ‘fashion’. In addition the designs represent ‘diet Coke’ as a sexy, sassy brand perfectly compatible with today’s woman.

The gold bottle represents ‘Career’, the red bottle ‘Passion’, the pink bottle ‘Love’, and the turquoise bottle ‘Fashion’.

Gifts for Newborns
Ever been invited over to a friend’s house to see their newborn baby? Kind of a big deal, right? The parents are scared of your germs and you’re scared of telling them how ugly their baby is and the baby is just scared of everything. Suffice it to say that it’s not a comfy scenario for anyone. But you can smooth out the process by bringing a nice gift with you. Check out my Gifts for Newborns list for a few ideas.

Happy Birthday Mr. President

Last Friday we celebrated Scott Morrow’s (President of ThisNext) birthday the only way we know how … with an obnoxious birthday cake.

Yep, that’s Kim Kardashian.

I wish you all could have been here to wish Scott a Happy Birthday but I am sure he will be happy with a birthday recommendation instead.  Recommend Scott a present and tag it “Happy Birthday”

Ridin' Calacanis Style

I know what you all are thinking, a day at the ThisNext office is like a walk through a shopping mall.  Well I got news for you buddy … we have meetings and stuff too just like any other office. Oh, except our meetings end with rides in sports cars.

This past Friday we had a meeting, which Jason Calacanis was a part of.  In the meeting one of my fabulous ideas was crowned “Best Idea of the Day” so I got a prize :) What was that prize you ask? No, not Christian Louboutin shoes (that would have been nice) instead I got the next best thing — a ride in the Tesla.

It was a fun ride.  Oh and when I say fun what I really mean is it’s fun to still be alive right now because I really thought I was gonna die for a minute there :)

So, prepare yourself to dive into a woman’s most sacred place - ok, maybe it’s second to her closet - and enjoy.

Grand Theft Auto IV vs Halo 3

Posted Monday, May 5, 2008 at 11:06AM

With all the attention given to video game launches these days, it’s no surprise that the bigger games get more attention.  We saw it with the launch of Halo 3, where everyone started foaming at the mouth… either to stand in line overnight and grab the first copies available, or to cherry pick stories to highlight how video games are corrupting our youth.  Either way it stands, we’re seeing the beginnings of an interactive cultural shift where video games are becoming more and more mainstream, more profitable, and more of a threat to standard entertainment.  You know you’ve hit a cultural moment when Mountain Dew creates a new flavor for their line called “game fuel”.

Grand Theft Auto vs Halo

The video game juggernauts square off in epic proportions virtually.

With sales of GTA 4 quickly approaching the sales of Halo 3 at launch, it’s going to be an interesting ride to see which game attains launch dominance.

Most Unique Recommendation of the Day

Posted Friday, May 2, 2008 at 10:52AM
An Elvis cow is not a common thing to come across - as a matter of fact, it’s probably the last thing you expect to find … ever. Yet, here it is. What other iconic legend animal hybrids exist? Yes, the Beatles had some wonderfully trippy creations in Yellow Submarine but we all know how those were created ;) . What’s next - a Jimi Hendrix puma, an MC Hammer lemur? The list goes on and on. See if you can find some more hybrids to recommend.

rise of the retro-machines: steampunk on thisnext

Posted Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 02:00PM

As a confirmed and confessed tech-geek, I am fascinated with the world of steampunk.  That fascination with creating something new and vaguely nostalgic from technology evokes a romanticism with the materials and electronics around me.  There are times I look at my iPhone and think, “the silver back is nice… I wonder what it would look like in distressed and stained oak?”.  Would it still work?  It’s the beauty and contradiction of technology and futurism combined with ancient alchemical and scientific notions of the natural elements.

Rise of the Retro-Machines

Here at ThisNext, I’ve rekindled my love of steampunk and I’ve found a community of other passionates who enjoy the form and function of the post-modern retro design.  I’m curious to find what inspires you and what other communities are created here when like-minded people start sharing.

Take a look at this list, Rise of the Retro Machines and many of the other amazing lists from ThisNext community members.

Balance 100 Calories Bars are Delicious

Balance Bar 100 Calories: Health & Personal Care

I think you all know this by now but I will say it again for those who don’t … I am a big fan of energy bars. I constantly recommending them on ThisNext (heck, I should put a list together … think I will).

Anyways …

I was at Trader Joes today and I stumbled upon these Balance 100 calorie bars. Now I enjoy a good Balance Bar, some of the flavors taste pretty good but many of those flavors have about 220 calories, ouch. So I was delighted to see a bar for only 100.

My excitement almost made me buy 10 of them but I controlled myself and got one. Um, should have got 10. These things were good. Like too good to be an energy bar good. It kinda tasted like candy but candy that is only 100 calories. I am going to order a box to keep at my desk because really isn’t 100 calories better than 220?

Want to learn more about energy bars (the ones that don’t suck?) Check out my Energy Bars That Don’t Suck list on ThisNext.

ThisNext Launches Our First App on Facebook - "I Want"

Posted Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 02:55PM

iwant-logo.pngAll of us here at ThisNext are excited to publicly announce our first Facebook app.  It’s very cool, it’s very useful and it’s a lot of fun!  It’s called “I Want”.  This app is all about giving you, our loyal fans a way to connect to your Facebook friends, tell them what you’re looking for and since they know you best, they can recommend exactly what you’re looking for.

That’s the core idea of “I Want”.  It allows you to share your product expertise with your friends, and when you have a specific “want” you can ask your friends to help you out.  Just like ThisNext’s home site, you can make recommendations on products already on the application, or you can recommend a product for your friends from any other site on the web.

When you first get to “I Want” on Facebook, you’ll be greeted with a question asking you to describe what you’re shopping for.  It could be something for yourself, or you could ask for gift ideas for your friends.

what%20are%20you%20looking%20for.png

It’s very simple, put what you want in our application, describe what you want and why you want it, send it to your friends, sit back and have your friends (with excellent taste and a good sense of humor) recommend things for you.

When I wanted a cool USB hub for my computer, I knew there were a ton of really cool ones out there on the market.  Fortunately, I have a lot of creative and tech-geek friends who have no shortage of opinions.  The result was probably the best blend of style and functionality I could have wanted.

Our app for Facebook is almost like a little social network inside a social network, it’s a place where you can share the best aspects of ThisNext and get real, personalized results.  As always, we’re open to your suggestions and ideas to make it better.  So, go forth, install our application, have fun with it and discover how useful it really is, because we aren’t going to send anything to you that we wouldn’t use ourselves.
