A winter's walk

Posted Sunday, January 7, 2007 at 02:56PM

Given all this wacky weather happening around the country, those dwelling in unseasonably warm regions have little excuse not to forgo winter hibernation and get outside this season. If you’re venturing into the great outdoors for a winter walk, first make sure to slip into some sole-satisfying sneakers. Andrea Vincent likes to stroll in a pair of Spira Wavespring Running Shoes, designed to give your feet extra impact protection. “I am a self-proclaimed shoe whore,” Andrea confesses, “but one of my running faves is Spira because they have tiny springs inside the soles that send energy normally lost into the pavement back up into your legs. Ingenious!”

To equip those kicks with the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, pick up a Marware Sportsuit Sensor+ for iPod nano. “Finally! A hack for the Nike+ sensor that allows you to use it on any shoes (not just Nike) and without the use of: tape, ingenuity, exacto-knife, superglue, scissors or thread and needle,” says eins. Ideal for “those of us lacking the Macgyver gene yet too cheap to to fork over >$100 for a pair of Nikes,” the sensor enables you to upload your workout stats automatically from your iTunes to the Nike website. And, of course, the device lets you “load whatever motivating music you like into the Nano and then listen to it as you walk, jog, run, saunter, swagger, lope, or stroll,” notes marysued.

If you’re up for an especially lengthy sauntering or swaggering, fuel up beforehand with an energizing snack such as Cafe Fanny Organic Granola. Although it’s “definitely not cheap,” says ThisNexter Debe Gray, the mix of organic rolled oats, sunflower seeds, sliced almonds, sesame seeds, and raisins is sure to “ruin you for all other granola.”

On those chillier days, bring along a Le Palais des Thes tea thermos filled to the brim with your favorite herbal brew. “The store is amazing, and the tea vessels are too,” says mereditharthur of the tres fantastique shop she visited on a recent trip to Paris. A lovely blend to pour in: Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s Winter Dream, which combines so many warming spices. “What’s not to love about cinnamon, clove, annatto, lemon, orange, nutmeg, licorice root and tea all co-habitating peacefully in a warm mug?” asks random. “Sip. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat.”

And for more challenging excursions, gear up with a LEKI Collapsible Walking Pole. “Perfect for any walking-hiking-trekking adventure,” according to Susan Eckert, the poles help to relieve stress on your knee joints and lower back. Tracks Walking & Hiking Staffs, meanwhile, come “outfitted with handy features like a steel spike for when the terrain gets tough, a strap that’s very adjustable, and a universal camera mount that turns the staff into an impromptu monopod,” says factotum.
