Be a yogi...or just look like one

Posted Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 10:10PM

Even though I don’t do yoga, have never done yoga, and maybe never will do yoga, I still sometimes dream of treating myself to a lovely pair of yoga pants. Maybe it’s because I live right next to an American Apparel, which means that practically every time I leave my house I’m bound to encounter a pair of perfect mannequin-legs clad in some fantastic color of supersoft cotton. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for the very graceful look achieved by that quintessential yoga-pant drape, and I want to fake like I’m yoga-graceful too.

Among those who can actually manage a deftly executed downward dog, Lululemon Athletica emerges as one of the most popular brands of yoga wear. Matt Reyes describes the line as “incredible fabric creations with yoga designs in mind,” while Danielle insists that “yoga apparel never looked and felt so good.” Laura Cestone is particularly fond of Lululemon’s Boogie Pant (left), as the cropped flares are “easy to move in, from running to yoga.”

That ease of movement is also key for Erin Bayer, who loves her Prana Gaucho Capris because they “look hot and I can still dance and stretch.” Erin also recommends Horny Toad’s Cayenne Pant (right), which she dubs a “step up from the black workout pant; excellent drape, don’t collect my dog’s hair, subtle side piping…” Lorie Parch, meanwhile, chooses Be Present’s Agility Pants because they’re “flattering, not clingy so you can wear them before & after class too, and they dry quickly after a vinyasa class.”

A very smart choice for October (i.e., Breast Cancer Awareness Month), the Pink Pony Yoga Pants by Ralph Lauren recently featured on Vegan Fashion Blog can allow you to support a great cause: A portion of proceeds from the pants helps fund programs for breast cancer screening, early diagnosis, treatment and research. Also ideal for the conscious consumer, Natural High Lifestyle’s Sweet Sweat Capris are 70 percent bamboo (a planet-friendly, renewable material). Discovered earlier this year by Green L.A. Girl, L.A.-based Natural High Lifestyle uses natural fibers throughout its entire line of yoga wear and casual clothing. And although GreenStyle’s designated Blue Canoe’s Yoga Pants (left) for the “brave of backside,” we propose that anyone who’s into the 90 percent organic cotton fabric give these low-rise hip-huggers a whirl (and you can always go for the layering look, as GreenStyle also suggests).

Still, my personal fave in yoga wear is still American Apparel, also a brand of choice for The Accidental Yogist (who says her sweatshop-free cami-and-yoga-pant combo helped her to look like an “honest-to-goodness yoga student” when she was still brand-new to the mat). Right now I’m swooning over the Cotton Spandex Jersey Straight Leg Yoga Pant, whose catalog blurb might as well read something to the effect of “Be a yogi – or just look like one.”
