Tori Amos - A Piano: The Collection

As word of an upcoming Tori Amos tour begins to hit the blogosphere, fans everywhere are dusting off their fairy wings and getting ready to fly out to their nearest concert halls. (And, okay, maybe the fairy-wing joke is a little unfair, but last time I saw Tori was in ‘96 - and those wings sure were a-flappin’.) ThisNext has got its share of Tori-lovers, three of whom have offered up gushing shopcasts for the boxset titled A Piano: The Collection. “Half greatest hits, half unreleased material, A Piano: The Collection is full of little treasures: alternative mixes, b-sides, demos, unreleased tracks…not to mention the impressive packaging in a keyboard shape box!” raves miumina. Revolutionarygirl is swooning as well, inquiring: “What more can you ask for from the queen of confessional lyrics, siren-esque vocals and sensual arrangements?” Also under the Piano spell, mellafe offers this tribute:

“For someone who’s been listening to her for ten years, this is one of those albums that gives you hope and makes you bouncy, because oh, dear, if the next albums are anything like this one, we’re going to need a lot of money to get them all. It’s fascinating, heart-breaking, amazing… and if you don’t know who Tori is or why we love her so much, this is the album to listen to. You’ll go through all the eras, find the best songs, and you’ll love her too.”
Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos

For most Tori fans - excepting those who somehow picked up on her dreadful 80s synthpop act Y Kant Tori Read - that love all began with 1992’s Little Earthquakes. “Little Earthquakes is my favorite Tori Amos album, and ‘Crucify’ is one of my favorite tracks,” says Dave at whywayup.org. “I can’t listen to ‘Winter’ without thinking about sitting around in my freshman dorm getting used to college and wondering what the rest of my life would be like. It’s often said that the music you hear growing up is the music you will love for the rest of my life — and I think this is the reason why. It’s not so much that your taste gets locked in at a certain age, but that you associate so much with the songs.”

Under the Pink by Tori Amos

For Jennifer at The Simian Line: Doin’ It Bloggy Style, Tori’s second record Under the Pink also conjures up many college-era memories. “The second half of the year was consumed by Tori Amos’s Under the Pink,” she remembers. “I’m sure I drove my dorm neighbor utterly batty that semester, but she was always listening to - and bellowing along with - Meatloaf and Celine Dion songs, so she deserved whatever punishment she got from me blasting Under the Pink and weeping.” (Oh, and an mp3 for one of the best tracks on that album, “Baker Baker,” is available for download over at lullabyes.net.)

But for ThisNexter roosoosh, the more recent release The Beekeeper is a top Tori fave. “Tori’s music is much of my creative inspiration,” she says. “This is her most recent album and has some amazing songs.”
