Better Bitters

Posted Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at 03:19PM
crodino.jpgIn America, we tend to reach for sugary soft drinks to quench our thirst. But the Italians have a penchant for somewhat more sophisticated tastes. Case in point is Crodino, one of the Italian amari, or bitters, that are popular both as quaffs and as mixers. Amari are not really all that bitter; rather, they tend to have complex, off-sweet flavors. Cheers to Mary at La Tavola for reminding us there’s more to life than Coca-Cola.

There are tons of bitters out there to try. Get a couple of bottles and you'll never have to buy soda again. A friend turned me on to them years ago and I'm always on the search for more. LeNell's (www.lenells.com), has a great selection if you're in the New York area and are pretty knowledgable. You can also check liquor stores in some of the predominantly Italian neighborhoods, although they won't know as much about cocktails as the folks at LeNell's.

I had the pleasure of enjoying Crodino in Italian cafes and bars in Umbria recently. I would like to purchase Crodino, but have no idea where to order it.
Any advice, please?

I just discovered this as well (it is delicious mixed with port, and a bartender in Monterosso said he also mixes it with prosecco & peach vodka). Where can we get it in the USA? I brought a few back with me...but those won't last long.

Thanks!

Like all the others I'm hooked on Crodino - we just returned from Venice where we were delighted to discover this refreshing beverage....seems like it was popular with all age groups. Does anyone know where to purchase this state-side?

Thanks!
