Dear Crumpler Backpack, I Just Can't Crumple You
Posted Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 11:15AMDear Crumpler Laptop Backpack … or The King Single, however you really prefer to be addressed:
I want to thank you for finally finding me, after all these years of stumbling around, smashing my previous laptop into sheetrock walls, car seats, hard concrete floors, people’s heads, campsite rocks, and sticky theater floors with only a very thin layer of Army/Navy surplus inbetween it and certain disaster. My old laptop decided to finally leave me altogether, most likely due to the torture and abuse I subjected it with, and really … can you blame her?
However, those days are in the past. It’s the dawning of a new day, and what better day than Valentine’s Day to thank you for what you’ve brought into my life. It just brings tears to my eyes, and I wonder where you’ve been all this time. I prefer to think that you were stored away on a peg somewhere, surveying the world, waiting for the day that you would finally pick out your match, leap from your wall-bound home, and envelop all of my belongings and nestle only on my back.
Not only do you hold my precious 15” MacBook Pro, which I am dutifully trying to keep scratch and dent free this time around, but you also take anything I throw at you. Remember the time I crammed a winter jacket inside your main pocket? Did you complain at all? No, not one bit. Your zippers didn’t even resist at all when I thought they’d never go around the down-filled monstrosity, but you took it all in stride. You’ve never complained about my taste in music, even though you hold my iPod so dear, and you never take me to task for all the work that I load you up with, and then never address, being one of the world’s champion procrastinators.
Your waterproof, ripstop exterior always stops any elements I manage to trudge through, while your interior laptop compartment, hidden pockets, and mesh storage areas keep things high and dry. You never complain about the time, the conditions, or the destination, and you let me make myself and my office portable. I must admit I feel some butterflies in my stomach whenever we are separated for too long, and whenever I think about our next adventure, I get a bit nostalgic and misty-eyed.
Crumper Backpack, I love you. Here’s to many more months … nay, years of you scratching my back, and me unzipping yours.
With fondness,
Kevin
