fool me once

I’m afraid I don’t have much room in my life for pranks and gags. It’s not that I don’t enjoy a good laugh, it’s just that I live in constant fear of being at the butt end of one of said shenanigans.
I won’t allow you to make a fool out of me, but I will allow you to make one for me. Fool is a traditional English dessert typically made with a fruit compote slathered in whipped cream or custard. Although it was originally made with gooseberries, today it’s commonly made with any tart fruit, especially rhubarb or raspberries. With strawberries just coming in to local markets, I’d say that’s a good place to start.
But whatever you do, be sure to use the best quality cream you can get your hands on. Here in Northern California, the choice, hands-down, is Straus Family cream. Their organic dairy products in recycled-glass bottles have a richness and sweetness that is unparalleled. Those berries might not stand a chance.
