Gift Guide: For the snowboarder

Posted Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 09:59PM

The perfect gift for a beloved snowboarder? Probably an all-expense-paid getaway to Park City, Breckenridge, Mammoth Mountain, or some other dream destination. But for a real-world shopping budget, a must-have like the Ogio Agent Rolling Snowboard Bag or the Ogio Terminal Travel Bag should do quite nicely. Both come recommended by ThisNexter Mike Osachuk who promises the former’s got “so many pockets for gear” and the latter “makes traveling so much easier.”

Very essential to happy snowboarding, apparel such as the Session Squad Snowboard Jacket, Burton Snowboards Down Jacket, and Oakley Snowboard Abominable Jacket achieves maximum comfort without sacrificing style. “The beauty of this thing is the pockets - a bunch of them, all in the right places,” says Steve Mazzucchi of the Session Squad jacket. “Plus, there’s a zip-out lining that doubles as a cool weather jacket. I wear it out all the time.” Jay Nedell likes the Burton jacket because it lacks the movement-restricting puffiness of some down attire, and Gretchen Bleiler digs her Oakley simple because it “looks good and keeps you warm.”

Also key for keeping warm, accessories like the Burton Headphone Beanie let you soundtrack your riding and please your ears in more ways than one. “There are those days when the temp goes negative and your ears need some protection besides a goggle strap,” says shopcaster Staviean, noting that the “headphones are not Hi-Fi quality, but they are more than sufficient when riding.” And what about the look? “The style of the beanie isn’t screaming ‘Hey look at me, I’m a cool kid,’ but it is screaming ‘Pilot to bombardier, open the bay doors,’ which I actually like.” And most important: “The beanie also keeps your noggin very warm and doesn’t lock in tons of moisture.” For making sure your snowboarder’s digits don’t turn all icicle-like while out in the snow, Gretchen suggests picking up a pair of Grandoe Gloves, featuring “white and brown herringbone and the softest leather out there.” And to guarantee plenty of healthy hydration, there’s the 100 oz. Camelbak Unbottle. “The Unbottle fits perfectly in the Burton AK pack and provides 100 ounces of sweet, refreshing water,” says Staviean. “The stops at the bottom of the mountain are strictly for alcohol and food consumption, so I rely heavily on my Camelbak to keep me hydrated during a day of catching some freshies, hitting the park or just some good ole free riding.”

For when your snowboarder’s off the mountain and kicking back at home, treat him or her to a subscription to frequency : The Snowboarders Journal. Published four times a year in limited editions, frequency “elevates the snowboard magazine from bathroom reading to coffee table book,” says Mary Catherine O’Connor. Your giftee can set that mag down on a piece of Snowboard Furniture from PatioAndYard.com, which recycles old boards into benches, chairs, ottamans, and tables. “Imagine grinding along this bench…it’s like board on board action,” says ThisNexter rugenius of the Recycled Snowboard Picnic Table. Rugenius also recommends the Recycled Snowboard Clock, which mdh2992 smartly includes on her fabulously curated Holiday Gift Guide: Recycled Products list.
