Gift Guide: Gifts that give back

Posted Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 05:39PM

Making a donation in a friend or family member’s name - whether it be to OxFam America, America’s Second Harvest, or World Vision - isn’t the only way to have your holiday presents support a good cause. By choosing products from companies that donate a portion of their proceeds to charity, you can score some beautiful gifts and benefit an organization you believe in.

A growing number of online shopping stops are working to support Third World artisans who create gorgeous, handcrafted goods. World of Good, for example, reinvests 10 percent of all profits in artisan communities across the globe - after paying craftspeople fair wages for items like this hand-embroidered Sinless Sequins Journal. Maroma’s Encens d’Auroville Mini Gift Collection, meanwhile, features six mini incense packets in a paper box, handcrafted by artisans in Auroville, India. In addition to helping create health care facilities and saving schemes for the artisans, Maroma turns 45 percent of its profits over to the development of Auroville and its surrounding villages.

Also a lovely gift for the home, these suncatchers from Uncommon Goods come recommended by John and Rose (“Just hang one from a window to take in the sun’s beams to produce a kaleidoscope of colors that radiate vibrant, dramatic light throughout any room,” the duo write. “What a great gift!”) Like all Uncommon Goods products - including the Button Pendants that mdh2992 calls “stunningly beautiful” and “great for a teen girl up to grandma” - a portion of proceeds goes toward a nonprofit of your choice (pick from Americares, Defenders of Wildlife, Comprehensive Development, and the Craft Emergency Relief Fund).

For the beauty junkie, consider the Aspara Aromatics Temptasian Gift Set. Featuring three mini handmade soaps, mini Body Silk, mini Yuzu Renew Sugar Smoother, and mini Sole Soother, the Asian-inspired, spa-worthy set helps benefit the Tsunami Volunteer Center.

If there’s a yogi on your list, check out this pretty-pink yoga mat from MatsMatsMats.com. Recommended by Colleen, 10 percent of the mat’s proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, with a minimum of funds going directly to researching the causes of and treatments for breast cancer. To support another women-focused organization, give your favorite tea lover a tin of Ambrosia White Plum Tea from Zhena’s Gypsy Tea. When you buy that blend (or Gypsy Earl Green, Precious Lemon Rooibos, or Uplifting Earl Grey), a portion of the profits goes toward the nonprofit C.E.O Women (a group that works to help low-income immigrant and refugee women in becoming economically self-sufficient). Plus, Zhena’s makes some of the most fragrant and sublime teas this tea addict has ever had the pleasure of sipping.

Another foodie treat, the Route 11 Potato Chip Tin from Immaculate Baking Co. should delight anyone who’s equally passionate about greasy, salty chips and rich, sweet cookies. And when you buy a tin of the cookie-chip hybrid yumness, five percent of your money goes to the Folk Artist’s Foundation.

And lastly but not leastly, treat your pet pooch to Orbee-Tuff Ball Dog Toy (“Super durable and dogs love it more than any other ball,” promises Katrina Herrndorf. Make sure to get the Glow for Good model, so that 100 percent of your purchase will go directly to the Planet Dog Foundation (the company’s not-for-profit arm whose mission is to support canine service programs).
