Gift Guide: Jonathan Adler

Quite possibly one of the most popular darlings of the design world, Jonathan Adler continues to delight us all with his fun, quirky, whimsical modern designs.

Adler’s designs go all over the place…from Christmas Stockings to Menorahs to campy pop pieces and fantastical characters. Price-wise, the range is as broad as his pieces. If you want to make it easy on yourself, choose one designer: Jonathan Adler, and cross everyone off your list with one of his ceramics, pillows, ornaments or tableware.

For classic Adler, I love the porcelain Giraffe object from his Menagerie collection. Being tall, the giraffe comparisons are an easy jest…so I am partial to this elegant Jonathan Adler piece. Partially because I love white, partially because everyone else is so into penguins and giraffes are so statuesque and pretty.

From the Utopia series - Jonathan Adler’s sugar and creamer set is quirky, whimsical and a little…odd. A great gift for the brunch hostess on your list!

I’m crazy about melamine and platters. To me, a funky platter just makes entertaining that much more fun, and platters are just infinitely useful. From Jonathan Adler’s Happy Home Collection, this retro platter is a fabulous inexpensive gift or treat for yourself. Did I mention it was inexpensive? The Happy Home Stockholm Pots Platter is on sale for $10.50 at Velocity Art and Design.

Once again, design*sponge shopcasts amazing finds.  She tipped me off  (in her own Jonathan Adler tribute post) to his new Fontana Collection which features beautiful, delicate pure gold overglazed on his white porcelain. My favorite is the Fontana Vase.    Who doesn’t love the gift of gold? For $110, this vase could take the place of a piece of jewelry or other nostalgic gift when you’re looking for something truly fine and special.

So maybe gold overglaze is a bit too serious? Adler’s Pop Collection should be a nice change of tune.  I’m dying over his super campy “pill” boxes.  For the substance abuser on your list…or rather your pop culture junkie, I recommend gifting the Dolls box.  Hilarious.  It’s a perfectly Adler porcelain box glazed and labeled “DOLLS” for a nice little tabletop catch-all to house all the pretty pink and green pills.  I’m gonna put this in my kitchen and fill it with Vitamin C.

Of course, a truly hilarious gift would be to pair the Dolls Box with (of course) the greatest camp book and movie ever: Valley of the Dolls.

For holiday themed gifts or decorations for yourself, Adler covers both Christmas and Chanukah beautifully.

In her remarkable Modern Menorahs Gift Guide, ThisNexter Laura Sweet shopcasts two stunning menorahs designed by Jonathan Adler: the Utopia Menorah, “made of stoneware with a light brown glaze, it’s evocative of 70s art”  and the POP Menorah,  “Get it before it’s sold out!”

If it’s sleek, simple Christmas decorations you’re looking for, Style Court’s Holiday 2006 Gift Guide recommends the Jonathan Adler Christmas Stocking (on sale at Bluefly), ” Love the pea green mixed with pale pink, for a twist on traditional Christmas green and red. Nice cozy wool texture.”
