Italian Princess Tiara for Sale

Posted Saturday, June 9, 2007 at 08:17AM

I hustle hard—writing about shoes means sweaty French-tipped fingers—so I hate splitting my cash with Uncle Sammy.  But a skip over the pond to find out what Zio Giovanni is asking from people lucky enough to live in the land where espresso originated (hint: not a Starbucks in Seattle) and it’s obvious the US dollar is greener.

To pay her taxes, Italy’s Princess Maria Gabriella of Savoy is selling her family jewels (note: not a euphemism for prostitution), including this Faberge tiara. To be auctioned by Christie’s in London on June 13th, Princess might cry a little when she remembers those tear-shaped diamonds were given to Empress Josephine by Tsar Alexandra I, after the French empress divorced Napoleon I.

Constructed in 1890 of those dirty diamonds and gold and silver, according to Luxist, the tiara is “estimated to be worth $774,384 and $1.2 million, but could bring more at the auction.”

I’m not sure it’s worth it, but—

If I hold my Starbucks allowance for a year I can buy it, and use leftover dollars to legally change my name from “Kristopher Dukes” to “Duchess Kristopher.”
