Lion Ladies
Posted Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 06:53PMAs our new month goes in like a lion, let us pay tribute to those ferocious females who rule the rock and roll jungle. The best place to start: None other than the so-called “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” herself, Tina Turner. “One of our favorite singers, the incomparable Tina Turner is equally adept at rock, soul, gospel, and R&B,” rave John and Rose, who deem her greatest hits collection Simply the Best a “fabulous CD.”
The duo also recommend Janis Joplin’s Greatest Hits, which includes classics like “Piece Of My Heart” and “Cry Baby.” “Who doesn’t know ‘Me and Bobby McGee’?” ask John and Rose of one of Joplin’s most memorable numbers. “Janis Joplin was a tragic figure and this fabulous compilation is one of the best I’ve seen from one of our greatest rock and roll stars.”
With a different but no less powerful take on the blues, PJ Harvey is at her most growly on 1995’s To Bring You My Love. “The passionate rawness of Polly Jean’s voice made me understand that there is beauty beyond the open lyric,” remarks Discology in reviewing this scary-perfect masterpiece.
Another stormy songstress who burst onto the alterna-rock scene in the early 90s, Courtney Love is currently gearing up to release her follow-up to 2004’s America’s Sweetheart. Although she’s earned more than her share of detractors over the years, diehard fans like syndicate product covert hq have still got a whole lotta love for the girl with the most cake. “Yes, she’s a recovering addict a few times over, often grating and irritating, and a terrible actress among other offenses,” the blogger notes. “However, her music rocks, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I liked her solo album from a few years ago.” (And please note that the photo in syndicate’s post shows both Courtney and her daughter Frances Bean wielding the Fender Hello Kitty Guitars selected by ThisNexter CArtiste. “I have a guitar myself, unfortunately when I bought my Les Paul there was no guitar like this in existence,” CArtiste says. “So cool and so cute at the same time.”)
New to the scene but still worthy of much worship, Amy Winehouse has more than proven her fierceness with her sophomore record Back to Black, loved by both cath and Chantel. “Just as steeped in hard living and raw talent as any strutting peacock of a rock star in the 1960s, Amy Winehouse is one of the most fascinating artists I’ve heard in a long time,” says cath. “She speaks her mind, sounds like a seasoned jazz singer and lives her life fearlessly. A bit like a dram of scotch, she’ll tease you, jolt your senses and leave you craving more.”
