London Fashion Week: Marc-y Marc by Marc Jacobs, Fall 2007

“Marc Jacobs commandeered Claridge’s, flew in a planeload of pretty friends, and changed the air in London the minute his gang started tripping into the Marc by Marc Jacobs show,” pens Voguette Sarah Mower, on Style.com. “Was it a glorious social spectacle?”

Your K’s fabsolutely sure that—

“Of course. For London to get a look at Sofia Coppola, Zoe Cassavetes, Selma Blair, Rufus Wainwright, Lisa Marie, and Lucie de la Falaise in the flesh was a rare treat indeed,” writes Sarah. “This sort of thing does not happen in the raw basements of London fashion week.”

Nope, normally those guys and dolls are hanging in the raw foods section of Whole Foods in La La Land. But I’m hardly interested in grocery shopping—I’ve a fridge full of very vanilla soy milk, espresso, and a vintage Saks mink cap (it’s too small for storage). Forgive my making love to PETA, just tell your K—

“But was it a life-changing show?” asks Sarah.

I’m guessing—

“Of course not. ‘Oh, I always think it’s silly to talk about themes and inspirations,’ said Jacobs with engaging frankness,” reports Sarah. ” ”The collection’s just always about this youthful, angelic, idyllic army. It’s comprised of a lot of things—big plaids, layered wooliness, gangly stockings—but really, it’s all about how people will break it down and wear it in their own way.’ “

So…

“In other words, it was supercute and stuffed with lovely accessories from the tip of a furry bonnet to the toe of the stack-heeled ‘skating boots,’ ” writes Sarah.

Anything like these Marc by Marc Jacobs ribbon boots, doll? A sunshiny orange, they’re all fresh—

“Beauty,” says ThisNexter ILoveSecondHandSmoke. “Need I explain more?”

No, I’ve gotcha, gorgeous.  Your K is more curious about Marc-y Marc’s fall 2007 show in London, and how—

“Skating was (loosely) the theme that ran through the cozy pileup of blanket-check coats, flimsy dresses pulled over stripy sweaters, knitted salopettes, and wide gray tweed pants,” writes Style.com’s Sarah. “For something so layered, though, it never seemed heavy, perhaps because of the short proportions and the minute, swingy pleated skirts that flipped under Empire coats. As only in a Marc by Marc Jacobs show, all this managed to look both girlishly spontaneous and thought out down to the last little detail—the details being thick gray rib tights; scarves with deep pockets in each end; platform hiking boots; a great selection of berets, beanies, pom-pom fur riding hats; and a covetable squished, peaked trapper’s hat.”

You’re saying it was as winter luxe as this Marc Jacobs fox trim hat, but cheeky chic as this Marc by Marc Jacobs extra-wide watch?  Like a trapper hat designed for girly girls, it’s—

“—rugged, but the white patent leather is pure fashionista fun,” says fashion blogette Stiletto Jungle. “Sure, it’s not for wearing with a suit on the way to a big work meeting, but it will go just about everywhere else. I love the idea of pairing it with a flowing cocktail dress and oversized handbag a la Mary-Kate and Ashley for a night out on the town.”

Are you thinking girling about Manhattan, Paris, or—

“—London?” asks Sarah.

Hmm, honey? Are you, too, wondering why Marc-y Marc showed in London town instead of New York City? Was it—

“As a one-off in celebration of the Marc Jacobs store that opened this week on Mount Street in the heart of Mayfair,” explains Sarah. “It finished off London fashion week with a bang—and a bash. At the after-party at the Connaught, weary show-goers gratefully got to eat, drink, and be merry for the first time in days.”

How mignon.
