ThisNext interview’s Mark Cutler who describes his interior design work as modern traditional.  This Australian-born designer is quite a fan with the folks in Hollywood- including Jennifer Lopez, Vanna White, Steve Carell, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Tom Skerritt…just to name a few.  To read more about Mark check out his profile page>

TN: Any sneak previews you can share with ThisNext readers?
MC:
Well we are currently working on a lighting line that embodies the Tableaux Cloth idea, We did a preview at a Elle Decor Dining by Design event, and it was well received, so we are currently looking at a chandelier and some sconces, stay tuned on that. I also have a book in the works, which will hopefully be out Summer 2008.

TN: Biggest response a design of yours has received from a client or consumers?
MC: I think the best response I got from a client was after an especially hard installation, my team and I were exhausted and the homeowners came home, and she just walked the house, totally in silence. We were all convinced she hated it (often we will lock the client out for the last week of a project so they get the thrill of walking in and seeing it all done at once). After she walked the home she came and hugged me and broke down in tears and said that all her life she had only imagined a house like this, and never knew it could ever exist. She felt liked she had stepped into her dream, it was a proud moment, to bring joy like that into someone’s life.

TN: The product that’s had the biggest influence on your design?
MC: Gosh that’s a tough one. The internet has changed the way my business runs, I can now shop online and buy from craftsman in Kenya, or artists in Australia, without leaving my office. My work is known for unusual finds and great detail, so being able to reach small undiscovered resources at the far end of the globe is priceless to me. As far as a single manufactured product? Ultraseude, would be high on the list, I use it on everything, furniture, beds, drapes and walls, it’s amazing, easy to mange, easy to clean and great to the touch.

TN: If you were a product, you’d be a________.
MC:
Blackberry Pearl, I literally can’t do anything without it, from emailing, to photographing, to keeping lists of books I want to buy or things I want to Blog about, it’s the ultimate device for me, I can order a pizza while booking a room at a spa, at the same time, I love Symmetry!

TN: Your favorite product discovery in the last six months… Or something that inspired you?
MC: I guess a Blog is a product. I have become seriously addicted to a whole bunch of them, the more I read, the more I realize I didn’t know, it’s crazy. But I have found some cool resources.

TN: Most prized possession?
MC: I have a book with a signed dedication from Albert Hadley, that would rate pretty highly.

TN: A product love secret you’re too embarrassed to share?
MC: LOL I am still too embarrassed to share!

TN: Name an item under your bed?
MC: Scrabble Board

TN: Something in your closet that is not apparel, shoes, bags, etc.?
MC: I have a box of tin masks that I bought at a Sale. They are sort of African Art, but made of old cans etc, I bought a whole box at a Sale I went to recently and I just love them, sort of chic, afro, tramp art. Not sure what to do with them yet, but I am convinced they will be amazing.

TN: Fav trend for spring?
MC:
Crisp, clean color. Like Orange, yellow and other citrus colors.

TN: Least fav trend for spring?
MC: Metallic’s

TN: Can’t leave home without my______?
MC:
Blackberry

TN: City or suburbs?
MC:
No question, City! I grew up in a small town in Australia, called Murgon. It had a population of about 1000 people at the time, I think it’s probably bigger now. While I would not change my upbringing for the world, I always wanted to live in cities. So I moved to Brisbane, then New York, London, Paris (briefly) and now Los Angeles, which I just love.

TN: Loft or the perfect house with the white picket fence?
MC: Hmmm definitely the house over the loft. I have two dogs a Bernese Mountain dog and a Cocker Spaniel, I definitely need space for them. Also I am from Australia, I love the outdoors and my garden, so a loft is just not my speed. I hope to be more Bi-coastal one day, then maybe a NY loft would be good,,,,, with a terrace :)

TN: Flip-flops or sneakers?
MC: Really a bit of both…..

TN: Coffee or tea?
MC: Coffee all the way. I am a total work junkie, my idea of resting is sitting in bed on my laptop, so I need some java to make that magic happen!

TN: Guilty Pleasure:
MC: Reality TV,,,, American Idol I cannot live without.
