More Is More: Say Goodbye to Skinny Jeans

Posted Friday, December 8, 2006 at 11:49AM

Seeing tabloid cover girl Lindsay Nicole Mischa Richie Lohan Barton in her skinny jeans was a sign that the skinny jeans trend had peaked, and the drainpipe denim bubble was going to burst in a few months.

Pop.

Let’s all us ladies and metro men let out a sigh of relief: the skinny jean is dead.

While some are returning to a classic flare for more classic flair, the super chic swing to the other extreme: the super wide trouser.

“There is a new trend emerging from the depths of the designer section,” says Stiletto Jungle. “There, wedged between the skinny black pants and the ultra skinny jeans. The biggest names in fashion are going — gasp — ultra wide leg!”

“They hide any extra weight in your hips and thighs while making your legs look long and your waist thin by comparison,” says Faking Good Breeding. “These pants instantly make an outfit look more expensive and put-together. They also evoke a 1940’s era American elegance that is both timeless and refreshing.”

Exactly. There’s still time to get invest in the trend before Rachel Zoe faux boho bots buy up, though a few celebrities have already got in early. Check these L.A.M.B. wide leg trousers. “If you’re longing to be ‘in vogue’ but cringing at the thought of painting on a pair of skinny jeans, slip into a pair of wide-leg pants,” says Hope Robertson. “You’ll look chic and be comfy.”

You got it, doll. And while I’ll pretty much never suggest you rock flats, wide-leg trousers call for your tallest heels to vibe right, especially if you go extra wide, a la these Lotta Stensson New York palazzo pants.  Says designer Lotta Stensson, “They are classic and look great with anything.”

So do these Robert Rodriguez gabardine wide-leg pants, though the “zany side-tie on these Robert Rodriguez wide-leg pants adds a little touch of whimsy that will be perfect for festive occasions,” says Stiletto Jungle. “I’d throw on a sequined top…”

Ooh la love, good call, doll.  What else?

“And metallic pumps for a fresh party look.”

We need to go shopping, love. Soy lattes on me. Till then, what else are you vibing?

“Alvin Valley, one of the absolute best labels for fabulous fitting pants, has turned out a pair of flattering palazzo pants that are to die for,” says Stiletto Jungle. “The combination of the slim waistband and single inverted pleat that starts a little lower on the thigh creates a super modern look that emphasizes a slim waist while minimizing the hips and thighs.”

Fab. Anything else?

“Head off to Sunday brunch in style with these Walter herringbone palazzo pants,” says Stiletto Jungle. “The loose fit and sweet bow belt are weekend-relaxed, but the superior fit keeps the look from appearing sloppy.”

It’s the details that do you right, just like in these Saint Grace Carol wide pant in brush.  A super wide, fold-over belt spotlights assets you inherited from your mom, giving form to an otherwise flowing, Friday night/Saturday morning sort of pant.

If you’re not ready to go super wide, and would rather test the waters first, check these more easily rocked Ann Taylor LOFT Laura wide-leg button pants. “Anti skinny pants,” says Debutante Clothing. “Love the normal rise. Flattering for all body types, not just waifish girlies.”
