New York Fashion Week: Anna Sui, Fall Double-Oh-Seven
Posted Thursday, February 8, 2007 at 03:26PM“Were those curtain swags decorating the hem of a minidress?” asks Nicole Phelps of Vogue’s Style.com.
Not sure, doll face. Are you talking about that frock rocked down the catwalk at Anna Sui’s latest party at the Tents?
“As a matter of fact, yes.”
Oh? Well, go on, gorgeous. I actually dug that little black number, along with the kitty cat-print coat - you know how your K feels about glammy dead animals - , so I’m interested in how -
“Backstage at her show,” writes Nicole, “ explained that she began working on Fall by looking at pre-Pop Andy Warhol and other commercial artists, and that afterward she became interested in interiors.”
Fabsolutely fascinating. So you’re telling your K that -
” ‘I put all of my favorite objects into the prints,’ [Anna Sui ] said,” reports Nicole. “So, bits of furniture decorated a silk charmeuse dress, newspaper print showed up on a crepe de chine number, and wool knits came appliquéd with sewing notions.”
I noted that notion, same as I saw the wood panel-like texture of a silk Sui used, same -
“As a concept, Victorian chairs aren’t as compelling as, say, Marie Antoinette at a New York Dolls concert (one through line from last season).”
You don’t say, doll. Though Coppola’s daughter’s Frenchy film didn’t do much for me. That whole eye-candied schtick about blaming society, then -
“And as a collection, it didn’t have the same spunk as some of Sui’s earlier efforts,” writes Nicole.
Were you missing Anna Sui’s butterfly boots? Or her poised peek-a-book lace sleeveless dress? I could dig it, because -
“Channeling the late Grace Kelly — but shorter — this lace number is all class,” says ThisNexter and fashion blogette Hope Robertson. “Its ivory-warm colour makes it a guaranteed winner on blondes, brunettes, and red-heads. And with the right overcoat, you can wear it all year-round.”
Or with flip-flops, if you live in La La Land. Though that’s hardly recommended by your K. Give me five-inch heels or give me… six-inch heels. Preferably gold, so they’d rock right with this Anna Sui metallic jacquard dress. With an easy chic kimono cut -
“This is one of the prettiest little dresses I have ever seen,” says fashion bloggerina and ThisNexter WNH. “Cute with sparkly heels but completely appropriate with flats and a cardigan.”
I’ll pretend I didn’t hear you pimp flats. Though with your chic advice -
“There’s always something to like in the designer’s magpie piles of coats, sweaters, and frocks,” writes Style.com’s Nicole. “Lacquered-silk anoraks layered under smocks or jumpers gave the show a sportier than usual edge. A pair of black lace party dresses—worn, in keeping with the trend, over fitted turtlenecks—looked like winners. And her silver-fox patchwork coat was so chic that even those furniture tassels could be forgiven.”
Amen, love.
