Ooh La Love: Marie Antoinette Chic

Let them eat cake, or -

Let them rock Manolo Blahniks.

More than a breezy biopic, much more than a flick saying anything interesting about modern society’s decadences paralleling the past’s, and much, much more than offering a legit excuse for the ultimate French It girl’s excesses -

Marie Antoinette was eye candy.

If you want your Marie seriously historically accurate, say tah tah to Sofia Coppolla and check Musées de France’s Marie-Antoinette dress replica. “If you are caught up in the Marie Antoinette mania then go to Musees de France online and buy a bit of her,” suggests Di Overton. The museum has a slew of Marie product, including the It girl’s late break into celebrity perfume, simply titled Marie Antoinette’s bottle of perfume. Alas, had the scent been manufactured during her lifetime, Marie’s income from it may have saved her bad budgeting and paid for her little splurges on baubles like Marie Antoinette’s necklace.

The necklace the Musées’ is based on supposedly cost the price of two war ships at the time. “Following the Marie Antoinette-inspired style can be expensive,” notes Stiletto Jungle. “For those of us without a queen’s budget, it’s all about these dangling gold-plated Antoinette Fan Earrings. They have plenty of fun rhinestones to keep us sparkly all night long. Pair them with basic black and they will make the ensemble sing.”

And “for a Marie Antoinette beauty fix, this Sephora Marie Antoinette Necklace fits the bill. It’s an antique-inspired locket containing a completely useful glitter lip gloss,” says Stiletto Jungle. “Twist off the subtly shiny faux jewel top to reveal a pot of opalescent gloss. Once the gloss is gone, you can push out the gloss pan from the back of the locket and replace with a favorite picture or keepsake. Those Sephora people are so smart.”

Extremely.

Still, I’m not much for wearing my makeup anywhere besides my face, so I prefer this Del Gatto Young Woman Cornelian Cameo. Cameos are classic luxe, and “the Italian Del Gatto family has been working in shell cameo art for over five generations,” says  Stiletto Jungle.   “It shows with this stunning Woman Cornelian Cameo Pendant. This regal creation shows a profile of a young woman with her hair pulled up with flowers and is framed in 18k gold. It can be used either as a pendant or a pin, but I would add it to a chunky gold rope chain for a look that takes the traditional cameo and gives it a funky, modern edge.”

And the most lustworthy Antoinette-inspired accessory? “Has got to be this hand-crafted collector’s evening bag from Lulu Guinness,” says  Stiletto Jungle. “The Lulu Guinness White Diamante Fan Evening Bag features a sparkling crystals hand-assembled to perfection on a satin white background. Very plush.”

And if you want less luxe and more real world, Style Guru tips you “look for velvet jackets with cropped collars and gold buttons in rich-looking colors like forest green and black… The look may also be translated to this season’s popular bubble skirts, which look just little fuller than A-line or pencil skirts.”

Oui.

Saw it in a sneak preview earlier this year, found the storyline lame, but the colours! The decor! Wonderful.
