Ooh La Luxe: Celebrate Luxury

Posted Sunday, October 8, 2006 at 12:10PM

Luxury isn’t just bling and things, luxury is personal, like beauty. It’s however you want to cater to yourself, pleasure yourself, indulge yourself.

Which for some, does mean blinged-out things, it means sitting at your desk, running your fingers over Neiman Marcus jeweled desk accessories. “The ultimate in luxury - mouse, stapler and tape dispenser studded with Swarovski® crystals. WOW!” says Di Overton.

Though maybe luxury for you isn’t sparkling crystals for pure aesthetic pleasure but the point where beauty meets function, where luxe meets practical, as in Horchow’s Swarovski crystal-studded earphones - “Musically inclined fashionistas are tuning in,” comments Luxury Portfolio - or a $1,495 Burberry winter coat. “I’m a fan of fitted coats that look like they were tailored just for the wearer,” says Grenade Fishing

Luxury that’s perfectly beauty meets brain is often best crafted in a watch, like a 1960 ROLEX Oyster Royal stainless steel wristwatch - “Simple, timeless, chic,” says menswear designer Duncan Quinn - or an URWERK 103.05 watch: “I love the fact that even though this watch costs more than an exclusive Italian sportscar,” says oOo, “it still has an amazing amount of poise and a total lack of in your face bling. Wear it and only the rarefied few will know that the case was precision milled from a solid block of titanium, then micro-sandblasted and hand polished with hymalayan goat hair.”

Maybe luxury is that fine point where beauty meets brains, that also disappears little fine lines you’re vain about, like Selona Black Diamond Truffle bath and body gift set, or a tiny tub of Ultra Rejuvenex: “This is one of the few ‘ultra’ facial moisturizing creams that actually appears to do something. I’ve given it to family members of all ages who told me it gave them results when nothing else did, and they are now hooked on it. One said that it even got rid of her crow’s feet,” says Sahara.

Luxury is for your actual feet, too: think massages, pedicures…

And shoes.

Luxury shoes aren’t just red-soled Louboutins or a $14K pair of Manolo Blahnik alligator boots: for international fitness presenter Lisa Wheeler, it’s pumps by Constanca Basto, as “My feet are my livelihood so I appreciate well-made shoes.”

Sometimes luxury is just a very finely crafted whim: I mostly love fur for its practicality, it’s the warmest, most comfortable outerwear, but I also love gratuitious fur, like in Giuseppe Zanotti white rabbit fur sandals or a chinchilla fur evening bag. While it’s classic, it’s pure indulgence, though not a five-minute one, like a pair of Missoni ribbed wool leggings: “Pricey, but when leggings are deemed heinous again I’ll wear them as thermals,” says Lola Is Beauty. Fashionable luxury can also be a lifetime investment into a timeless handbag, like a subtle Louis Vuitton “Epi Passy” handbag, a Cartier alligator handbag, or ultimate It bag Hermes Birkin.  “Ever-covetable blue jean 35cm Birkin in togo leather with palladium hardware. It will be the talk of your social cirlcle when you stroll into your next charity luncheon. It’s timeless,” says Decades Inc.
