Silly love songs
Posted Sunday, January 28, 2007 at 08:48PMSomehow I have been completely, unironically obsessed with “Silly Love Songs” by Wings for a good month or so now, an infatuation that consistently draws lots of snickering from the music snobs among my friend group. Whatever - I heart Paul McCartney forever, and I’ve got no shame about being taken in by so much sappiness. Which is a nice way to feel during Valentine season, since packing a Scroogey attitude about all those heart-shaped boxes floating around right now gets old real fast.
It seems that others roaming ThisNext may share my fondness for fantastically lovey-dovey lyrics, considering all the picks for records like Elton John’s Greatest Hits. Whether or not “Your Song” makes visions of hot Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman dance in your head - thanks to its use in Moulin Rouge - there’s no denying the ballad’s beauty. And the collection makes for a “great album to sing along to during a car trip up the coast,” promises joe.
Another pop star piano man, Billy Joel may make you go all misty-eyed with “Just The Way You Are,” off of The Stranger. John and Rose dub their pick “an amazing pop album,” noting that Billy Joel’s music is positively “brilliant.”
The shopcasting duo also digs The Very Best of Sting and The Police, a four-decades-spanning CD that includes my personal all-time favorite love song, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.” (And for those not really feeling the love right now, the album also offers one of the best break-up songs ever with “Can’t Stand Losing You.”)
Going back a few years before The Police came along, The Beach Boys turn out so much shiny happy pop with the Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary CD+DVD (Limited Edition Fuzzy Package), selected by thesonofhob. “It’s the classic Beach Boys album that stands up right along side the greats,” says thesonofhob, pointing out that the classic love song “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is one of the record’s top tracks. And for shiny happy folk, there’s “Colours” off of Donovan’s Greatest Hits, which is probably really good for twirling and spinning in vast fields of flowers with the one you love (if you’re into that sort of thing).
But for your most reliable source of silly and not-so-silly love songs, it all comes back to Paul McCartney and that band he used to play with sometime way back when. Out of the 27 songs featured onThe Beatles 1, at least half are love songs, and all are undeniably perfect. “Essential for any collection,” according to keck, the collection of the band’s number-one hits is another favorite for John and Rose. A few key tracks with which to love up your ears this Valentine season: “Something,” “She Loves You,” and of course, “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”
