V-Day Drama: Induldging in the Dark Side of Valentine's Day (part I)
Posted Monday, February 12, 2007 at 07:55AMI have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day.
Pros:
- everything is pink and red for s spell, which makes the whole world look lovely
- spreading the love is always a good thing
- you are expected to eat chocolate and drink wine with wild abandon
- gifts are a bit more thoughtful and sentimental than at Christmas
Cons:
- flowers become black market items
- everyone (single or matched) runs the risk of becoming horribly bitter at having “love” jammed down their throats
- bad Hallmark commercials interrupt The Office & LOST
- no matter what you do romantically, you’ll probably end up disappointed or in a fight with your mate because you’ve convinced yourself that everyone else you know is doing something more fabulously romantic than you
So, even despite some positive Pro’s, I tend to steer away from Valentine’s Day all-together, except to send notes to fun people whom I really really love like nieces and nephews, my parents, and friends to whom I kind of forgot to send Christmas cards.
Instead, why not indulge that bitter side, and spend the evening…maybe even the whole day… making yourself feel better by watching movies and/or TV shows about people whose lives are pathetically unbalanced.
I give you the V-Day Drama Guide - this edition is all about classic TV shows.
Who better to swim upstream in a pool of drama than the master of soaps, Aaron Spelling? Spelling has staged great cat-fights and b##ch slaps over several decades, and I think he’s just the man to celebrate Valentine’s Day with. My faves? Melrose Place, and Beverly Hills 90210 of course.
Melrose Place ranks a little higher in my book. It’s just classic 90’s love trysts with all the over-processed, metro-sexual, shallow, sun-shiny, cat-fighting LaLa Land drama you’ll ever need. It’s SOOOO dramatic, and makes for a perfect boob-tube fest on V-Day.
However, of all the night-time soap operas, NOTHING can top Dallas…The mother of all night-time soap opera dramas. The Queen of all bi#ch slaps. The one that started it all. IMHO it doesn’t get any better than Dallas. It’s campy, over-acted, completely unrealistic and Big Bad Texas and fabulous. I say skip the over-priced dinners this Valentine’s Day and have yourself a Dallas marathon. Seriously. WHO DOESN’T JUST LOVE JR EWING? He’s pure evil and I love it!! If you think you have relationship problems, just check out what the folks at Southfork have to deal with, and maybe you won’t feel so bad.
But, if the 70’s & 80’s aren’t your thing, then a modern-day classic is surely Sex & The City. Sex and the City defined an entire era. Whether you’re having a love affair with a guy/gal or with Jimmy Choos & Fendi bags, SITC has romance for all. And come ON…no one has more screwed up love lives than these girls. See? Don’t ‘cha feel better already?
And lastly, there is one sure-fire feel-good TV show that I have left off my shopcast list. In my mind, no one does drama better than the folks at Days Of Our Lives. Marlena, John, Sammy, Bo and Vicktor can certainly trump any love woes you might be feeling - so I say pop the champagne and dig out your old VCR tapes and let ‘em rip.
Valentines Day will never look so sweet.
