Wardrobe Staple: The Hoodie

Posted Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 12:43PM

“Who doesn’t love a good hoodie?”

Hmm, I’d say myself and my Italiano lover , but that’d be a lie.

“Comfy and cozy, hoodies are a closet staple that is impossible to give up, despite the fact that your average hoodie is less-than-fashionable. The solution? Create a fashionista-worthy hoodie that combines the comfy, cozy hoodie feel with a downtown look that is pure fashion,” says Stiletto Jungle. “That’s exactly what Mike Gonzalez and Christine Park-Gonzalez did when they created these amazing hoodies under their own label. Tell me they are not the coolest hoodies you’ve ever seen.”

Ooh la love, I won’t, but I will  say there’s something about a simple, John Doe sweatshirt hoodie - if ever I rock casual gear, I like it classically simple, and -

It amuses me to think how this more plain Mike & Chris black parker hoodie would rock over my navy beaded flapper frock. “The ultimate cotton hoodie, so much style and flair no one will know you are so comfortable,” says stylist Barbra Horowitz. Even less fuss is a Gap full-zip hoodie. “A classic grey zip hoodie, perfect for the last summer days and the beginning of fall,” says Nico.

For something more between fashion and non, check a simple silk screen, a la a Lady V hoodie by 12Grain - “A quality item with embroidered everything,” says Hide Your Arms, “though the Oriental style might not be to everyone’s taste.” Or a Lotus hoodie, or a Lucky Fish hoodie, or a cheeky chic Backseat Kiss Clothing “Cowboy” hoodie. “Robot sheriff badge + six-shooter holstered in the pocket = much awesomeness,” says Hide Your Arms.

And just for the boys - though your girl’s bound to steal it - there’s True Love and False Idols’ hoodie sweatshirt. “Have you ever had a hoodie that has a custom silk lining in it, that is nothing short of an art piece?” asks Matt Meyerson.

No, but perhaps it’s about time.  I also dig this Morphine Generation “Familia” pullover hoodie. “I have several hoodies, but finally someone came out with a cool pullover sweatshirt,” says John Ransom “Looks great and is perfect for running errands or hanging out on the weekends.”

As is this 3/4-sleeve hoodie cardigan, by fashion empire Juicy Couture, who first elevated the hoodie to designer status.”I love this sweatshirt,” says Saltimbanca. “Totally utilitarian except for the bow, which adds an unexpected feminine touch. Very flattering, goes great with everything.”

Including PJ’s? “You know those chilly, wet days when you just want to curl up with a good fashion magazine and stay inside?”

Not often, but I vibe you.

“This cozy Gap sherpa hoodie is the perfect top to pop on over pajama bottoms. It’s chicer than sweats (which means it’s perfect for casual brunch dates or walking the dog) but it’s completely cuddly (this is a fabric that’s used for baby blankets and clothes),” says Cynthia of About.com’s Fashion blog.
