Who's That Blog Ninja: ThisNext writer Kristopher Dukes

Posted Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 05:05PM

kristopher.jpgShe’s the only gal we know that lives solely off Kashi bars and soy lattes - and no one sports mink or rocks hooker heels better than our intrepid fashion writer Kristopher Dukes.

When she’s not writing her Top 10 fashion blog (that’s of Women’s Wear Daily y’all) , she’s…writing for everyone else…from TopButton to ShopETC to (thankfully) us.

She may always look utterly fabulous, but she still can’t write haikus. Check out what else Kristopher can & can’t do, what she’s loving on ThisNext, and reading in the world wide blogosphere.

Name: Kristopher Dukes

ThisNext profile url:

Best physical attribute:
Five pounds of black eyeshadow, daily.

We know you’re a ThisNext blogging ninja, but can you write a haiku about you, your blog, or what you do?
I spent my college literature classes writing fashion articles on my iBook… Can’t do haikus. …

Or – in sentence form – describe to us your ‘web identity’
A fashion writer who ooh la loves five-inch heels, vintage mink, and soy lattes. And you.

(as you write this) Where in the world are you, and where is your favorite place to blog? (that is to say are you wireless? Home-bound? In a library? Sneaking computer time at work?)
I’m in La La Land, Los Angeles, and I’m usually blogging from my desk.

What are the last 5 items you purchased?
Seared tuna salad for lunch today.
Five-inch black velvet wedge platforms with big bows on the vamp.
Oatmeal blueberry scone and iced soy latte at the Getty.
Cleaning and storage for my 1960’s chocolate mink peacoat.
Alteration on a beaded sheer cocktail dress (had the slip made much shorter).

Multiple choice: What kind of shopper are you? And please explain your answer.
a. Dedicated to a few select stores/sites
b. Open to anything anywhere
c. I make everything I want
d. I shop when I need to

D. I shop when I need to, though I’m not sure when anyone really needs six-inch platforms with clear vamps and a solid plastic black heel, or a 1920’s navy beaded flapper dress. Still, I only like to invest in clothing I know I’ll rock for years.

So you’ve made quite a few picks on ThisNext – what is it about these items that prompted you to share them with the world?
Shopcasts can really give a glimpse into someone’s lifestyle: I’ve got a soy latte list, because I live on them as I hate sleeping. I’ve got an “Elements of Style” list to detail my uniform of vintage mink, too-tall heels, and beaded cocktail dresses. “In My Bag” shows what I tote while I girl about town.

Who are some of your favorite shopcasters so far?
I love looking over the shopcast network in general. It’s so easy to frolic in.

You’ve written a ton of blog posts about a ton of blogs on ThisNext - which ones stand out as up-and-comers or here-to-stays?
The Manolo, the Sartorialist, and all the Shiny Shiny ladies know what they’re doing.

Which movie can’t you stop yourself from watching even though you know- by all accounts- it’s a really bad movie?
I rarely watch movies or TV. I tend to get more stuck rereading the same novels (anything by Edna Ferber, Edith Wharton, Henrik Ibsen, Ayn Rand) and listening to the same songs (almost all Jay-Z, almost all day). I know, le shocking, I think people think I’m sitting at my desk, watching Sex & the City DVDs on my iBook all day.

What is your biggest vice?
Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack.” He’s so pretty.

What is your biggest indulgence?
Maybe drinking 16 shots of espresso a day, but that falls more under “survival” than “indulgence.”

* Stream of Consciousness: Any thoughts you’d like to share about ThisNext? Shopping? Social Networks? Blogging? Your mission for world domination?
I can’t do stream of consciousness, I prefer rivers of perspective. Or soy lattes.
