Sweet Tater Vintage on Mulberry Street in NYC specializes in gorgeous upscale vintage pieces. Every item has been hand-picked by the shop’s two lady owners, from their tours of the East Coast of the US to the side streets of Italy and Greece (with their native aunts as guides). Their adventures in Mediterranean fashion inspired an in-house collection of voluminous dresses, tunics, and tops - all available in three sizes only, designed to flatter all body types (just like in the Old Country).

The Fall/Winter collection this year consists of simple tweed wool and pinstripe suiting, including the outrageously great Duckhunter Dress (above, far left), a fully lined herringbone wool dress with a kangaroo pocket in front and a button-closed “duck pocket” in the back. Because semi-formal duck hunting never goes out of season.

harder better faster sweater

harder better faster sweater

The weather outside is…well, not entirely frightful, but sort of chilly, sometimes, except on those days when it’s not - and the fire is so…non-existant, in my Brooklyn-based case, but since I’ve got no other place to go, I figure I’ll compromise with indecisive Mr. Old Man Winter and get half-bundled up, half bare. And what better way to go than with a soft, sexy, understated, attention-getting sweater dress? They’re practically unavoidable this season, but I’m liking the minimal cashmere v-neck look from Daryl K - although a lush gold beaded number can’t hurt either. Let it snow or let it not - you’ll still look hot.

Ladies this bra will make you look good for $22.12, it pushes you up and in, and you still feel comfortable and look full, (I better watch what I say, but you know what I mean)

scent of a woman

Posted Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 07:14AM

Not to jump on the “Germany is weird” bandwagon, but Germany is a total freak show. As if you needed further proof: the Germany-based Vivaeros research lab team - as in, multiple people, presumably with serious science backgrounds and extensive training - has developed VULVA Original, an erotic fragrance that simulates the scent of…well…a woman. Their marketing materials are quick to assure you that VULVA is not a perfume. Instead, a man should brush the “irrestistable essence” lightly on the back of his hand and inhale - or, if you’re the man in the ad on their website, huff deeply with an expression of self-satisfaction and possible anger on your face, preferably while relaxing in a starkly decorated apartment next to some dazed-looking porn actresses.

thisnext%20blog%20erotic%20scent%20women%20vagina%20vulva%20germany%20aroma%20fragrance%20women%20men%20erotica%20sex%20toys.jpg

The press materials don’t clarify what goes into VULVA - er - but promises that each vial is full of a “precious organic substance.” A tiny vials comes in a minimal black box with a rather vivid insignia, and is small enough to enjoy “anywhere, anytime”. Germans must be huffing the stuff on their daily commute, because the brand is so popular that it’s coming out with two new VULVA scents - VULVA Eighteen, in a virginal white box, and VULVA Exotic, in a brown box. They may be weirdos, but I’ll give them this; their campaign certainly has the cleverist and sketchiest use of the “.com” extension I’ve ever seen.

fly like bird

Fly like Bird: Best of Bird Boutique

If their website is anything to go by, Bird Boutique is entirely staffed by adorable, stylish, witty young women with gorgeous hair. I wish I could debunk the myth, but this pint-size women’s clothing boutique is on my block, and so far there’s been nary a flyaway in sight (besides the accidentally on purpose kind).

Each piece seems lovingly hand-picked by a young woman with a distinct and consistent eye, and no wonder; head buyer Jennifer Mankins got her chops at Steven Alan and Barney’s New York. All Bird’s wares are beautiful, feminine, and luxurious in a bicycle-riding Brooklyn way, with a recent emphasis on blousy Philip Lim and Alice Ritter dresses. At some point every day I find myself in front of their window muttering, “I want that dress…and that dress…and that dress…and those shoes…” until I can yank myself away and go home, finances barely intact. So it’s just my luck that they’ve recently opened their online store.

So long, September rent! (See my Best of Bird Boutique recommendations on ThisNext)

Winter Get-Away: Kimpton Hotels Know How To Treat A Lady

Posted Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 09:02AM

With the West getting pummelled with bitterly cold temperatures, and the long dreary months of January and February just beginning, a little vaycay and some pampering might be just what the doctor ordered.

WellHeeled suggests that travelling gals check into Kimpton Hotels for some serious attention,

“Being a solo traveler, safety, comfort and cleanliness are at the top of my list of must-haves. Kimpton Hotels roll out the diva mat when it comes to their female guests; from complimentary Yoga baskets to often-forgotten necessities like nail polish remover. Little luxuries only a woman could have thought of!”

Kimpton Hotels - which has a slew of fantastic stays all over country - has launched a program called Women In Touch which created a standard level of amenities for all their hotels focused solely on the needs of their female guests.  They have on hand essentials like sunscreen, make-up mirrors, tweezers and nail polish remover, and even Luna Bars in the honor basket.

With packages like the “Sex and the City”, “Desperate Housewives”, and “Gals Just Want To Have Wine” in hotels from Aspen to Boston this might just be the excuse you’ve been looking for to fly the coop alone or with your BFF.

Crystal at Girlbike rides a silver 2004 Vespa ET4 named Rosa, whose seat is covered in purrrrty leopard skin - as if Vespas weren’t already covetable enough. She also blogs about everything a scooter-riding lady needs to know, including “gear, accessories, riding technique, safety, negotiating traffic, dealing with intimidation or prejudice in shops or on the road, long-distance riding, and more.” And then there’s her super-valuable “deal alert” posts, where Crystal hips us to bargains on everything from Volatile USA platform shoes to Fieldsheer jackets to - whoa - the Four-Person Steel Quad-Cycle Roadster. We’ll skip the four-person ride and stick to crushing on Rosa, who reveals her lovely self below.

Men Belong in the Kitchen, Too

poll_household.jpgWe love polls. Really. A lot. Even if 23% of all statistics are completely made up, there’s something gratifying and validating about seeing one aspect of humanity broken down into neat pie slices. Adam at Men in Aprons is a major proponent of men in the kitchen, so we’re pleased to see that his poll indicates a perfect balance of the genders in culinary duties.
