Menu for Hope: We Have a Winner

Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 03:08PM

Ladies and gentlemen, we have waited one long month to find out the winning bidder on our fabulous cocktail kit that we offered up for this year’s amazing Menu for Hope program. More than two hundred amazing prizes drew thousands of bids, ultimately raising more than $60,000 to feed the hungry via the United Nations World Food Programme. Nice work!

But our long wait is over, and the winners of all the prizes have been announced.  And so, without further ado, we can finally announce which lucky guy or gal will receive our fantabulous offering.

Drum roll, please.

And the winner is …

Anonymous.

Wait, what?

Anonymous?!?! Who wouldn’t want the world to know they won this amazingly cool collection of cocktail components? What nefarious plan might they have in store for them? Should we call Homeland Security?

No matter the myseterious bidder’s motive, we’ll hunt them down and deliver their prize, don’t you worry.

Did you bid on another wonderful prize? Hop on over to Chez Pim and check the roster. You may already be a winner!

The Season of Giving ... Still

Posted Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 02:21PM

Now that you’re all shopped out and the gifts are given, do you still feel a little … empty? It’s not to late to celebrate the true season of giving. While you and yours are popping open the top button on the trousers and contemplating renewing your gym memberships to recover from this season’s barrage of gluttony, millions are starving around the world. Some of them are in your own back yard.

Anita at Married …with Dinner celebrated Boxing Day the old-fashioned way, by boxing up some extra food and giving it to her local food bank. You can do so, too, and she points would-be do-gooders to Second Harvest, where you can find local food banks. Consider volunteering as a food sorter, too. In fact, gather a group of friends and make a day of it. A bunch of Bay Area food bloggers are doing it soon. Come on, it’ll be fun!

If you have more money than food or time on your hands, you can still, obviously, make a difference. Stephanie Lucianovic at Chow: The Grinder notes two charitable organizations that do more than merely feed the hungry today; they teach the hungry to feed themselves. What better way to squeeze in that last-minute donation for your 2006 taxes?

It’s only appropriate that we take this moment to thank everyone who bid on this year’s Menu for Hope campaign. This year we raised over $58,000 for the United Nations World Food Programme — that’s almost three and a half times as much as last year. We’re just dying to see who wins our fabulous cocktail kit, but wait we must — results will be announced on January 15.

Menu for Hope: Last chance to bid!

Posted Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 11:07AM

There’s less than 36 hours left to bid on the incredible array of prizes for this year’s Menu for Hope campaign. At the time of this posting, we just crested over $40,000 smackeroos donated for this very worthy cause. But it takes a lot of money to feed a lot of hungry people, so keep bidding! I know I’m not done yet.

Naturally, the bestest prize in the bunch is our very own and très swank chocolate-orange cocktail kit (prize code UW39), suitable for suave and sophisticated soirées. And while you’re at it, why not bid on the cookbook my partner and I made (prize code UW26), so you can whip up some smart snacks to sip with? But there are gobs of other amazing prizes to be bid upon. Yes, even more fabulous than ours:

A Menu for Hope

Posted Monday, December 11, 2006 at 10:18AM

menuforhopelogo.gifWhat with all the running around, shopping for gifts, it’s sometimes easy to forget the real meaning of giving during the holiday season. As you salivate over shiny kitchen gadgets and scrumptious Christmas cookies on your favorite food blogs, be mindful that millions around the world are starving, today and everyday.

Dozens of food bloggers around the world are making an effort to help out, with A Menu for Hope, hosted by Chez Pim. Each blogger is donating something (in some cases many things) that you simply have to have. All you have to do is donate cold, hard cash for an opportunity to win something fabulous.

Each $10 donated is worth one raffle ticket entry for the prize or prizes of your choice. Think about it: For ten bucks, you could potentially win a once-in-a-lifetime experience, like coffee with Thomas Keller of The French Laundry. Or an autographed set of four books by Anthony Bourdain. Or a big ol’ Kitchenaid stand mixer, fire engine red of course.

Donating is easy:

1. Choose a prize or prizes of your choice from our Menu for Hope.

2. Go to the donation site at http://www.firstgiving.com/menuforhopeIII and make a donation.

3. Each $10 you donate will give you one raffle ticket toward a prize of your choice. Please specify which prize you’d like in the ‘Personal Message’ section in the donation form when confirming your donation. You must write-in how many tickets per prize, and please use the prize code—for example, a donation of $50 can be 2 tickets for EU01 and 3 for EU02. (Please use the double-digits, not EU1, but EU01.)

4. If your company matches your charity donation, please check the box and fill in the information so we could claim the corporate match.

5. Please allow us to see your email address so that we could contact you in case you win.  Your email address will not be shared with anyone.

Then, check back on Chez Pim on January 15 for the results of the raffle.

So won’t you shell out a few sawbucks to feed the hungry?

Gift Guide: Gifts that give back

Posted Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 05:39PM

Making a donation in a friend or family member’s name - whether it be to OxFam America, America’s Second Harvest, or World Vision - isn’t the only way to have your holiday presents support a good cause. By choosing products from companies that donate a portion of their proceeds to charity, you can score some beautiful gifts and benefit an organization you believe in.

A growing number of online shopping stops are working to support Third World artisans who create gorgeous, handcrafted goods. World of Good, for example, reinvests 10 percent of all profits in artisan communities across the globe - after paying craftspeople fair wages for items like this hand-embroidered Sinless Sequins Journal. Maroma’s Encens d’Auroville Mini Gift Collection, meanwhile, features six mini incense packets in a paper box, handcrafted by artisans in Auroville, India. In addition to helping create health care facilities and saving schemes for the artisans, Maroma turns 45 percent of its profits over to the development of Auroville and its surrounding villages.

Gift Idea: Buy A Cow

Posted Friday, November 3, 2006 at 12:05PM

oxfamcow.jpgI’m gonna cut right to the chase here - I’ve always gotten the idea of giving a charitable donation in lieu of a material gift to people on your holiday list, however, I was never really sold on the fact that the receiver would feel like I really gave them something for Christmas (you know, like those times where you “buy” someone a magazine subscription, but then conveniently forget to order the subscription).

Anyway, I’m not trying to be a Grinch here, Aunt Beep is all about doing good and giving back - I’ve just never done it on other’s behalf.

This year that is gonna change.  Lynda from Delight.com directed me to OxFamAmericaUnwrapped.com and I am in LOVE.  OxFam has created the cutest sub-site dediced just to giving charitable gifts. You can purchase a cow, or camel, or crocodile or even plant a garden, help start a small business, or install water pumps and bathrooms in areas of the world where these things can be used the most.

The best part?? Their gifting is so flapping cute, you’ll want to buy cows (a mere $75) for the whole family. In return, OxFam America will send the recipient a photo card with said cow on the front, and details explaining your gift and exactly how that money will go to use.

SOOOO much better than a gnarly fruit basket.

Choosing a charity based on it’s ‘packaging’ may not be the best way to save the world, but hey - you’re still helping save…somebody.  And that’s the greatest gift of all.

The Best Things: Free

Posted Monday, August 28, 2006 at 11:25AM

kindness.jpgShopcasting isn’t just about buying things, y’know. It’s about the things that are important to you – the products, the tools, the places, the people. Ann Douglas, the Mother of All Bloggers, understands that: one of her lists (she’s got ten of ‘em!) here is The Best Things in Life Are Free, and it talks about exactly that: everything from Blogher to The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation – items on the net and in the real world that, as Ann says, “won’t cost you one sweet dime”…but really will make your life more worthwhile.

Forgiving Fashions

Bikinis, skinny jeans, bridesmaid dresses…

We know many designs created by fashion aren’t very forgiving, but the industry itself can be charitable:

Reports The Runway Scoop:

“Today via Fashion Week Daily I learned about Hugo Boss’s sponsorship of a basketball boot camp called “Extreme Basketball Camp”. 250 inner city kids are taking part in this week-long event where some of the NBA basketball icons have made an appearance.

Also via Fashion Week Daily, I found out about Jones New York’s “Shop For Education” week. The company will be donating 10% of their sales (up to $500,000) between October 14-21 to their “In The Classroom” program supporting teachers and children’s education.”

Plates With A Purpose

Why we love Plates With A Purpose from the Riverside Design Group

  1. Riverside donates 15% of proceeds back to local Pittsburgh chapters of organizations like Alzheimer’s Association, Habitat For Humanity & AIDS Task Force.
  2. Each of the 5 designs reflects the missions for the organizations they are helping
  3. All the plates are made and handcrafted in Pennsylvania
  4. They’re really pretty.

Planet Lactose has proven itself an invaluable resource for the lactose intolerant, spreading the word on the use of lactose in medications, milk alternatives, and remedies for healthier digestion. Now, to help the 12 million Americans with lactose intolerance or other food allergies, Planet Lactose has tipped ThisNext off to the third annual nationwide Walk for Food Allergy, happening August 19 through November 18. Check the post for info on how you can help “increase awareness and raise research funding for a disease that currently has no cure.”
