mountain range coat rack

Donovan says: “First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.” But for Brave Space Design, it’s more like: “First there is a big pile of scrap wood, then there is this adorable coat rack in mountain range theme.” Masters of sustainable style, the Brooklyn-based studio has spared no trees to create its cutely named wooden Coat Range. And, as Emily at Inhabitat notes, the design “takes advantage of the wood’s inherent colorations to create the snowy white (yet green) alpine snow caps.” So eco-sweet.

lucky charms teapot

demakersvanluckycharms.jpg

For anyone who’s ever thrown a tea party so fabulous you felt like chaining your guests to the table afterward…

Actually, not really. Demakersvan’s Lucky Charms centerpiece isn’t a functioning teapot. It’s more like jewelry for your dinner table, as delightful cutely points out. The funnest part: You can mix and match the ceramic pieces to make a larger or smaller chain - sort of like an infinitely more elegant version of those charm bracelets we children of the 80s were so obsessed with way back when…

greeting cards as decor

gagatreebunnycard.jpg

Sadly discovered just a wee bit too late for Mother’s Day, Gagatree’s Winter Garden pop-ups are some of the sweetest greeting cards I’ve ever seen. Mailed just like a regular card, the prettily printed paper wonders unfold into keepsake ornaments (watch how it works here). I like the one with bunnies best, but there are also kitties and squirrels and butterflies and birds.

succulent wreath

Posted Sunday, May 13, 2007 at 05:45PM

Much adored by us un-green-thumbed types as World’s Most Impossible-To-Kill Plants, succulents take a very lovely form in this pretty piece of front-door decor. Hand-assembled, VivaTerra succulent wreaths come lush with green-gray, burgundy, and silver leaves. And the fact that those fantastically fat leaves are so skilled at saving H20 means nothing but good for both Mama Earth and those of us who might go, say, six to eight weeks without ever remembering to feed our dear green friends.

Your DNA Is Beautiful

DNA11 - Fingerprint Art

It’s really the blue-print of your life, the stuff that makes you you.  That said, don’t ‘cha think DNA deserves a little more…publicity? street cred? adoration?

The folks at DNA11 think so.  You send them a sample of your DNA, or your fingerprint and they’ll send you back a gorgeous art print.  I had the pleasure of seeing the DNA11 booth at this year’s NY International Gift Fair, and I have to say, DNA is quite beautiful, and the prints are top-quality, rich artistic presentations.

And ThisNexters seem to agree, loft3 says “Its as personal as art can get. What I love about this service is that the printing quality is great and you pick your color so you know it will coordinate with your decor.” And artizen (who is in fact an art historian, collector and critic) muses DNA11’s Fingerprint Art is a “neat idea for a unique, personal piece of art that looks amazing.”

Of course, giving your DNA some serious props, is like the ultimate pat on your own back. As Gordon says, “I suppose in some ways, the DNA11 prints are for the ultimate narcissist, but I rather think they show a healthy interest in and engagement w/the rest of the world.”

Here’s to you, Double Helix.

Eye Candy For Decorators

ChefSink, Double Deluxe from Sonoma Cast Stone

My morning blogging got a little sidetracked today as I have been drooling over two newly discovered home decorating sites filled with eye-candy to make you swoon.

Thankfully, I pulled myself together long enough to let you in on my discoveries.

ThisNexter Moonlit (who writes a gaggle of blogs) recommended this gor-ge-ous sink by Sonoma Cast Stone which she pulled from HomePortfolio.com.  The site let’s you “search the best in home design” and is filled with thousands of delicious items to fill, furnish and update every room of your home.  I just spent 10 minutes drooling over sinks, and that is only the beginning.

No sooner did tear myself away from HomePortfolio, did I discover our friends over at Apartment Therapy: LA enthusiastically gushing about Living Etc.’s new re-design and their addition of an online gallery filled with decorated rooms.

Now, how have I missed this site?  Living Etc. is a British home and design magazine “for modern living” which I certainly have read - however I never had the presence of mind to check out their site.  Often, print magazine websites rarely offer useful features to their dedicated readers, but this one is a major exception.  Their gallery has page after page of lovely rooms and informative quips on how you might achieve the look yourself…all for free, and no login required!

Shelter-lovers, rejoice!  Between HomePortfolio , LivingEtc. and of course the thousands of recommendations on ThisNext, you can feel pretty confident that the inspiration you need is just a mouse click away.

Gift Guide: Pretty. Grainy. Woodsy.

Posted Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 09:40AM

If you like to add a little feng shui to things, you’ll know that wood is the first of the five elements because it symbolises the beginning of life.  While a true feng shui purist will tell you that living wood is really the only element that can truly evoke proper feng shui, Aunt Beep Shui will tell you that giving a gift of something earthy, woodsy and eco-chic can possibly do just as much to settle the frazzled nerves of your recipient.  Let alone make them smile.

OhSweetheart bought this gorgeous wooden briefcase from Takumi Shimsmura for her boyfriend, and she says after “after six months of wear and tear it’s still just as beautiful now.”  I love the polished light woodgrain of this briefcase.  It’s very Feng Shui James Bond, wouldn’t you say?

Much like Faux Trophy, Faux Wood can be equally as alluring.  There’s just something about making elements of nature into plasticy manufactured modern objects, like this Ever Together Tyvek Wallet, equally loved by stylish bloggers decor8 and Creature Comforts, and available at GreenerGrassDesign.

Gift Guide: Jonathan Adler

Posted Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 02:55PM

Quite possibly one of the most popular darlings of the design world, Jonathan Adler continues to delight us all with his fun, quirky, whimsical modern designs.

Adler’s designs go all over the place…from Christmas Stockings to Menorahs to campy pop pieces and fantastical characters. Price-wise, the range is as broad as his pieces. If you want to make it easy on yourself, choose one designer: Jonathan Adler, and cross everyone off your list with one of his ceramics, pillows, ornaments or tableware.

For classic Adler, I love the porcelain Giraffe object from his Menagerie collection. Being tall, the giraffe comparisons are an easy jest…so I am partial to this elegant Jonathan Adler piece. Partially because I love white, partially because everyone else is so into penguins and giraffes are so statuesque and pretty.

blik blog

blick.jpgIf you’ve opened a design mag in the last several months, chances are you’ve read the praises and seen the designs of blik - the wall graphics design team that is taking our walls by storm.

As a design concept, I’m really excited about the new wallpaper/decal craze….blick sums up the allure of decals perfectly as - “wall graphics for the committment phobic” - and blick has received well deserved enthusiasm from consumers and designers alike.

Not blicked out yet? Well lucky for us blik now has a blog, and - just as you’d expect - it’s bright, cheery, excited and passionate with fun commentary and updates on all their goings on.

Clear your walls folks.  Blick is here to stay.

Paper my Walls

Posted Friday, June 16, 2006 at 03:28AM

Oh Joy! has been a design+inspiration blog I have enjoyed for some time. This site curates gorgeously designed products, art & clothing with a mindful nod towards whimsy, delicate details and joyful construction.

I stated earlier that wallpaper is going to be a big upcoming trend, and I’m not so sure I’ve seen any as creative, inventive and just plain cool as this frames wallpaper from Graham & Brown.

Oh thank you, Oh Joy!
