Patch It Up

Posted Sunday, April 1, 2007 at 11:04AM

If you’ve ever doubted why you ought to invest a G in designer duds.

If you’re looking for a better deal on a Louis than a faux vogue Fouis from Canal Street in NYC.

Check this Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork bag — “made up of samples of 15 different Louis Vuitton Handbags from the LV spring/summer and cruise lines,” so says luxe blog Luxist, with so many designer bags deconstructed and reconstructed into une, considering the average Louis’ll set you back $1,000, you’re stealing a deal at a mishmashed 15 for $2.4K. “It takes all the best parts of the season’s creations and rolls them into one. We are confident that the bag is utterly exclusive and that it will remain so,” said a spokesman for Monsieur Vuitton.

Limited edition and numbered, it still takes all of April 1st for your K to recommend this bag to you.

Black Lips? No Joke

Walking dolls for Tara Subkoff’s Imitation of Christ showing at L.A. Fashion Week Fall 2007 runwayed with porcelain pale skin, midnight-shaded hair, and jet black lips, playing up the collection’s glammy goth vibe.

And you thought La La Land was all 24K fake and bake tans, faux platinum locks, and pearly pink lip slicks.

Though your K’ll stick to her smoky eye, check your right for the fresh evolution of last season’s red lip.

The thought of black lipstick too much the stuff of your April Fooling your mamma during high school?

Check the limited-edition Smashbox for Imitation of Christ lipstick, which hung out in Imitation of Christ show’s goody bags. A sheer, deep grape, slick it on for a quick face update.

And top it with a black lipliner for dinner with your boy, to get him back for his buzzing his head bald last April 1st

Drop It Like It's Haute

Double your soy latte, doll, go ahead and reach for another blueberry scone:

Because while your K was over that neo 1950s ish five minutes before it was five minutes ago —

The cherry lips, the fat and full skirts, the harsh hourglass.

— So’s finally the rest of fashion, with spring double-oh-seven forgetting your WASP-y waist for a more modern mod A-line, for a jazz baby drop waist, for a Marc by Marc Jacobs “Loreli” jersey dress.

Clean and fresh like your spring ought to vibe, unlike some of Marc-y Marc’s  designer duds

You can rock this frock sans worries of getting sent to rehab with him.

You may recall, doll, designer e-boutique Bluefly’s last commercial - the S-E-X-y dressing for a night out that led to fast undressing for a night in.

Check their latest - more than pretty faces dolled up in discounted designer duds, Bluefly’s “The Catch,” by actor and director Tony Goldwyn, stars a boss lady almost getting brushed off by her boy. Rather than wishing and waiting for her wants, she ___________ —

Styling her own luck.

Jean Paul Gaultier Perforated Cabas Bag

With spring double-oh-seven ‘round the corner, with rolling back the clock and sunlight shining longer, your K understands you’re clocking more hours and you’re hustling hard, but—

But.

But, it’s time to free up enough space in your life so the sun shines through, it’s your season to scheme bigger  and live larger than clutching at some tiny dark thing that just fits in your palm, it’s right now to invest in—

This Jean Paul Gaultier perforated “Cabas” bag. Bright white is pure, perforated leather is light, and such a big bag carries your all—

From your dipping in Miami peach Bellinis between Manhattan power lunches.

Though, really, a sleeky chic Meriden leather python-print wristlet wouldn’t do your spring into spring so bad either, doll.

Tom Ford Black Orchid

Your K’s thumb is more neon pink than vibrant green, the only thing she likes to grow are the pairs of four-inch-plus heels in her closet.

But I love plants: soy beans birth vanilla soy lattes, coffee bushes lead to chocolate-covered espresso beans, spring greens make a bed for seared salmon, and lush orchids are luxe inspiration behind Tom Ford’s “Black Orchid” eau de parfum. Bottled black like midnight, I—

“—don’t even know what this smells like, and I want it,” says ThisNexter Krampalicious. “The description just sounds exactly like me and I bet it smells amazing.”

I love to meet ladies who love themselves. Knowing yor own worth adds some value in my book, it means you’re not just—

“Another exclusive, this one only at Neiman Marcus and a little bit more within my price range, but the perfume (not the eau du toilette) is definitely $600. Tom, you saucy minx, you. He is the only gay man I’m completely in love with in spite of it all.”

Oh?  Unrequited love never smelled so romantic to your K, though I’m sure—

“I like to think he’d do me.”

Get Your Whimsy On

Clinique Happy For Men

All smart whimsy, Dr. Seuss has been almost as inspiring to your K as a pair of chocolate suede, rhinestone buckled platform peep toes she recently acquired. Maybe more wise than Anna’s monthly love letter in Vogue, Seuss had the sass and suss to know you ought to—

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Thanks, Doc.

For a second I was reconsidering my usual charcoaled, smoked out eyes, I thought I might vibe more norm and do only two coats of mascara for my power lunch. Life breezes by in a blink, it’s a touch much too short not to be…

Paris Fashion Week Fall Double-Oh-Seven: V. Westwood

Vivienne Westwood Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection

60-something and still fiercer than Tyra Banks’s sloganning of the word, Vivienne Westwood’s punky chic constantly catwalks in like a lion, though—

“The provocations with which Vivienne Westwood once surprised fashion have now become the norm,” writes Voguette Nicole Phelps for Style.com, reviewing Vivienne Westwood’s fall 2007 ready-to-wear collection for Paris fashion week.

How’s that, honey? Are you partly thinking so since the grand punk madame did a diffusion line with shoe maestro for the masses Nine West? Does it vibe funny that she went from exclusive “pirate” boots—“I [had to] hunt them down from a store in London,” says trend forecaster Zoe Schaeffer—to made-for-mall Nine West “Romann” sandals?

All glossy straps and a clean four-inch heel, while the limited-edition stilettos were ready to rock easy for almost any doll, they still—

“—kind of have a dominatrix kind of feel to them,” says ThisNexter Keirsty 81. “So you can feel innocent and commanding all at the same time.”

So your K’s not sure what the unfuss is about Ms. Westwood rocking slightly mainstream, though I’m sure—

“You can see, for instance, her draped and twisting silhouettes with their unusual volumes in the Japanese collections,” continues Nicole. “The assimilations have sapped some of the shock value from her shows, but they haven’t dampened her enthusiasm.”

Christian Dior Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection

“If you’re getting into the forties this season (and that’s definitely one way to go), John Galliano is the man to fulfill those latent Joan Crawford urges, no holds barred,” writes Voguette Sarah Mower for Style.com.

Your K’s more for flapper frocks and original It girl Clara Bow, though I’m sure—

“His ready-to-wear collection for Christian Dior was virtually a camp-fabulous Hollywood spectacular—like a pumped-up 2007 remake of The Women (Cukor, 1939; ever a fashion favorite), but this time played out in full glorious purple, pistachio, electric blue, and fuchsia, rather than black and white.”

Fabulousness, because if you’re living largely, life isn’t only bouncing between two colorless shades—your life ought to be psychedellic Pucci-print scarves, sky denim Birkin bags, it should be—

“A comeback from last season’s comparatively muted collection, this was Galliano performing at full throttle, filling the runway with 58 girls dressed, as grandma would say, to the nines,” reports Sarah.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection

“Leave the 180-degree turns, the frantic grasping for new ideas, to other designers,” writes Nicole Phelps of Vogue’s Style.com.

Hmm, did I catch a sly diss on Marc-y Marc Jacobs’ latest, love? Fine by me, though - despite past chunky heels and frumpy volume catty chatting otherwise - he is a boy genius.

Emphasis on the “boy”?

So let’s talk strong men, and how -

“Ralph Lauren delivered one more in a line of self-assured collections today,” writes Nicole, “and, even better, proved he still has the power to surprise.”

Anna Sui Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection

“Were those curtain swags decorating the hem of a minidress?” asks Nicole Phelps of Vogue’s web home, Style.com.

Not sure, doll face. Are you talking about that frock rocked down the catwalk at Anna Sui’s latest party at the Tents?

“As a matter of fact, yes.”

Oh? Well go on, gorgeous. I actually dug that little black number, along with the kitty cat-print coat - you know how your K feels about glammy dead animals - , so I’m interested in how -

“Backstage at her show,” writes Nicole, “Anna Sui explained that she began working on Fall by looking at pre-Pop Andy Warhol and other commercial artists, and that afterward she became interested in interiors.”

Fabsolutely fascinating. So you’re telling your K that -

” ‘I put all of my favorite objects into the prints,’ [Anna Sui ] said,” reports Nicole. “So, bits of furniture decorated a silk charmeuse dress, newspaper print showed up on a crepe de chine number, and wool knits came appliquéd with sewing notions.”

Betsey Johnson Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection on Style.com

“Sending out invitations slipped into pairs of white gloves and lining her runway with tables set for tea, Betsey Johnson established a ‘School of Charm’ for her latest [fall 2007 New York Fashion Week] show,” writes Laird Borrelli of Vogue’s Style.com.

Sounds fabsolutely charming, Ms. Borrelli. Though I sensing B’s tongue delicately poised in cheek, otherwise how -

“Could this really be the same designer whose cheeky antics have included those “Guysheart.pngB.J.” tees?”

Glossing over the collection, your K’d say -

“Apparently so,” writes Laird. ” ‘Fall is more elegant, refined—more grown-up,’ the perennial teenager said. ‘We have to be more about the cake than the icing.’ “

Marc Jacobs Fall 2007 Ready-to-Wear Collection on Style.com

“When the red velvet curtain finally opened, Marc Jacobs’ 56 models were arrayed tableau vivant-style in front of an enormous set of French doors—the kind you might see in a Paris salon,” writes Nicole Phelps of Vogue’s Style.com.

Ooh la love. So tell me -

“What you noticed first were the hats. Multicolored, with knit crowns, and short or wide brims, they made the gangly teenage girls onstage hold themselves like proper ladies. Yes, fashion’s favorite change agent was at it again.”

Did you type “ladies”? Funny, maybe your K’ll be a fan of more than Marc-y Marc Jacob’s It bags and cheeky-chic jewelry, as my major complaint with the fashion darling is that he styles for 30-something-year-old women who want to vibe like awkward teens. So you’re telling me, doll, that -

“Last season’s billowy layers were nowhere in sight.

Christian Dior Spring 2007 Couture Collection

“I’m sure you all have gorged yourselves on the Dior Haute Couture shots by this time,” says Fashionologie.

Actually, doll, I’m indulging in a sea of ThisNexters’ picks, like this Lady Dior dangling necklace that spells out “Dior.”  All cheeky chic, so mignon as a Valentine for your fav conspicuous consumer, it’ll let you  -

“Show your ‘Lady Dior’ side with this gorgeous dangling necklace,” says Rose, of John_and_Rose

So you want one, love? Tell your John, or maybe buy it yourself.  I -

“I don’t blame you, I couldn’t wait either,” says Fashionologie.

To gift yourself that necklace, love? Or for -

“The triumvirate of Galliano on gowns, Pat McGrath on makeup, and Stephen Jones on headwear definitely ruled the runways with an iron fist — and I mean that in the most complimentary way of course — what a spectacle it was,” says Fashionologie.

Seeing Double C

Chanel Quilted Choker

“You know,” says Fashionologie.

No, I don’t know. Do tell your K.

“I am always against the gratuitous display of logos, but there is one brand I can always make an exception for — Chanel,” says Fashionologie.

I’m coocoo for Coco, too, but let’s hear why, doll face. Is it -

“Don’t ask me why, don’t ask me how, that’s just the way it is,” says Fashionologie. “Somehow the double-Cs of Chanel look so elegant, but Gucci’s double-Gs, just a few small lines apart from the double-Cs, don’t have the same effect at all.”

New Book To Drool Over: Tord Boontje

Posted Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 09:21AM

If you’ve been in just about any modern home store, been to Target or watched their ads, read a design blog or browsed on ThisNext, you’ve probably noticed quite a few mentions about designer, artist and craftsman Tord Boontje.

Much like our dear Jonathan Adler, Mr. Boontje is quite the darling of the design set lately.  And, like all darlings destined for international greatness (and home lines in major big box chain stores) Tord Boontje is releasing a book so that we can all impress our friends with some serious design eye-candy on our coffee tables. (oh, and maybe learn a thing or two.)

True design darling blogger decor8 tipped us off on Tord Boontje’s Spring 2007 release, and here’s what Amazon has to say about the book:

Featured in headline exhibitions at the Milan Furniture Fair, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Art Basel: Miami, the unique paper creations and furniture developed by Boontje have become global objects of desire, spawning a cult following among collectors and design consumers. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 sketches, concept renderings, and photographs, the book is a comprehensive visual document of the designer’s work and an art object in itself, featuring a number of custom printing effects-stencils, perforated and die-cut pages, and textured and woven details-that capture the intricacy of Boontje’s approach to pattern-making.

And yes, you can pre-order.

More Is More: Say Goodbye to Skinny Jeans

Posted Friday, December 8, 2006 at 11:49AM

Seeing tabloid cover girl Lindsay Nicole Mischa Richie Lohan Barton in her skinny jeans was a sign that the skinny jeans trend had peaked, and the drainpipe denim bubble was going to burst in a few months.

Pop.

Let’s all us ladies and metro men let out a sigh of relief: the skinny jean is dead.

Gift Wrap Yourself

I don’t do sloppy, I don’t like loose ends; maybe that’s why I dig bows.

I’ll leave the faux Freudian fashion analysis to Flaunt, though.

And why don’t you leave your gift wrapping to the girls at Bloomies, and tie up your outfit with some bows, doll?

Your boy will dig you looking your best better than that Sony Playstation 3.51.02 under the tree.

Don’t believe me?

Check Kay Unger’s silver strapless moire bow dress.

“What better festive statement to make during the holiday party season than wearing a dress that says, ‘unwrap me’?” asks Lux Lotus.

Ooh la love, love.

Gift Guide: Jonathan Adler

Posted Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 02:55PM

Quite possibly one of the most popular darlings of the design world, Jonathan Adler continues to delight us all with his fun, quirky, whimsical modern designs.

Adler’s designs go all over the place…from Christmas Stockings to Menorahs to campy pop pieces and fantastical characters. Price-wise, the range is as broad as his pieces. If you want to make it easy on yourself, choose one designer: Jonathan Adler, and cross everyone off your list with one of his ceramics, pillows, ornaments or tableware.

For classic Adler, I love the porcelain Giraffe object from his Menagerie collection. Being tall, the giraffe comparisons are an easy jest…so I am partial to this elegant Jonathan Adler piece. Partially because I love white, partially because everyone else is so into penguins and giraffes are so statuesque and pretty.
