Win a Zune MP3 Player

Posted Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 10:46AM

It was back in December when the news broke that (now) President Obama used a Zune MP3 Player. Fascinated, people flocked by the tens of thousands to read the write up. There was so much traffic reading the article that the Web site hosting it crashed. Yeah, that’s right, it crashed and all because a man we admire deeply listens to his tunes on a Zune.

The way I look at it is that if Obama uses it, than it’s got to be something spectacular. So, in the kindhearted spirit of ThisNext, we decided we’d just go ahead and give one away. All you’ve got to do is start tagging your recommendations “TN Tunes” for your chance to win a Zune MP3 Player and figure out what all this presidential music hubbub is all about.

Navigation System With Breathalyzer

Posted Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 02:44AM

ndrive-breathalyzer.jpg

The G400 from NDrive is ideal for celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and others who can afford to be chauffeured to nightclubs but instead drive tipsy/ drunk. If you have to drive from the bar/ nightclub, get a G400 installed in your car so it can tell you if your BAC (blood alcohol content) is above the legal limit.

The G400 navigation system has a built-in breathalyzer  located on the drivers’ side, and with an actual alcohol sensor it can calibrate itself when turned on to account for the amount of alcohol already in the atmosphere. It then instructs you to blow on the little air vents. After a few seconds it records your BAC, and tells you if it’s okay to drive. It even makes a frowned face if the alcohol level is more than the legal limit depending on where you are. Watch Video below

It’s a fast paced world we live in…where would we be without all of our gadgets?

I don’t know because I can’t imagine life without them anymore! I love my gadgets!!!!  I wake up in the morning and put a record on the turntable, but if I’d rather hear something from itunes then I crank up the portable PA system for iPod that chills in the living room while I make some breakfast and sometimes I cup o’ noodle it on this convenient little kitchen gadget called the AudioCubes instant noodle perfecting timer. I am a multi-media fiend and wherever I go so does my camera and  my flip video camcorder, because haven’t you ever been somewhere and thought “that would make a great picture!” or “Holy crap that did not just happen! I could have put that one Youtube!” Yup it’s happened to me too! But never again!

One of the coolest gadgets I’ve come to find is the Takaratomy Transformers Music Lable Soundwave MP3! He is the coolest gadget/toy and there’s more where he came from at Oh My Gadgets!

Who Is Susi Weaser?

Posted Monday, September 17, 2007 at 01:34PM

shiny.jpg susi.jpg

When this girl’s got gadgets on her mind, you’ll find her liveblogging about the hottest trends and fashionable finds on Shiny Shiny.

Susi Weaver is helping tech-savvy ladies the world over discover the benefits of owning the latest Naughty Toys and Hello Kitty products, keeping us up to date on slick accessories and techie gear—and giving girl power a whole new meaning.

When we caught her (pink-handed), sharing some of the latest gizmos and accessories on ThisNext, we had to put down our DS Lites and catch up with the gadget blogger for a few interesting bytes of information…

TN: How did you get into tech blogging?
SW: I was lucky enough to get invited! I used to work in PR, but I’d become fascinated by the immediacy and the power of writing on the internet, as well as the completely different style you wrote in online. When Shiny Media asked me if I wanted to get involved ‘on the other side’ I jumped at the chance.

TN: “Girl gadgets” seem more acceptable now, but when do you think girl tech went more mainstream?
SW: Much as I hate to admit it, when the pink Razr came out, I think it made a lot of girls start considering technology as an accessory , rather than a necessity. There’s no excuse for just sticking a pink coat of paint on a product now though – we’ve moved on!

TN: What are some girl gadget trends for Fall?
SW: The Wii has made everyone excited about gyroscope technologies, that is, gadgets that you control by moving them around. There’s an MP3 phone coming out shortly which you control by flicking forward and backwards (watch out if you’re on crowded public transport!).

Speakers have always evolved with time, like the small JBL’s that sound way bigger than they really are. But colorwise, unless you like piano black and white you are out of luck. With Audiopro though, there is some hope. They have unleashed this colorful allroom range Hi-Fi speakers. They will match your ‘skittles candy,’ colorful living room, bedroom, kitchen or even bathroom. “experience the rainbow, or whatever that skittles TV commercial states.”

With a cylindrical form lens, the Nikon 360 Degrees Digital Camera can take all-round pictures. Its equipped with an angle indicator that provides a gauge on the direction of the rotating head, and stability to the camera while in operation. A built-in inclinometer indicates how horizontal a position is prior to taking a picture. The Nikon 360 is designed with much emphasis on the users interface.

Looks like it’s in the concept stage, I am not sure if, and when it will be available to the regular Joe.

Wall Mounted Printer

Printers seem to always lag behind when it comes to sleek innovative designs. But this might be a thing of the past. Netherlands-based U.S designers: Leon Ransmeier and Gwendolyn Floyd have this sleek wall mounted printer concept on display at the Cooper-Hewitt Triennial. Designed to hang on the wall, the printer wirelessly connects to a PC, and displays print-outs under a glass, as temporary art pieces until you pull them out. “ except we all know official documents don’t look like Picasso paintings.”

well into the future

"health products of the future" recommendations at ThisNext

Although I do drink my green tea by the gallon and eat up all my fruits and veggies like a good little health geek, I can’t help but be intrigued by Woody Allen’s vision of a future where deep-fried food and cigarettes are so good for you. But just in case the late-20th-century doesn’t turn out to be quite as it’s portrayed in Sleeper (part of the Woody Allen Collection DVD 8 pack), I’m going to keep up with the omega-3 supplements and jogging for the time being.

What the future of health more likely holds is gadgets galore, and I’m not talking about the Intoxication Orb passed around at parties in Sleeper. Rather, we might be seeing more technology like the Zadro Nano UV Disinfection Light Scanner, a device that “destroys germs using UV-C light,” according to moxie. “When you feel like you don’t want to take any chances, whip out this cell phone-sized germ/bacteria/virus destoyer and with a simple 10 second scan of the UV (ultraviolet) light, you can safely kill 99.9% of them,” promises The Green Head, who suggests scanning everything from keyboards to shopping cart handles to “your kids, their toys, and on and on.”

Like catching colds, messing up your wrists with too much mousing is another major office health hazard. “When you use a mouse or a keyboard all day, you start to realize that carpal tunnel isn’t just a myth,” says the GadgetGuy in recommending the Hoverstop Mouse. Equipped with a built-in sensor, the mice/mouses/whatevs “vibrate and buzz when you’ve been gripping them too tightly, so you can learn the right way to treat your body,” GadgetGuy explains.

Pressure pleasure

Acu-Point Acupressure Pen

Most everyone knows the acupressure-borrowed trick of squeezing the web between your thumb and index finger to tame the terrible throb of a bad headache. Now, with the help of an Acu-Point Acupressure Pen, you can work even more pressure-point magic - all without getting schooled in the ancient Chinese technique.

By sending a “stimulus signal” to whichever parts of your body need healing, the pen energizes your muscles and nerves while helping boost your blood circulation. “Your own portable acupressurist (is that even a word?) in a pen, swanky,” notes GadgetGuy.

And yes, “acupressurist” is most certainly a word - as in “at-work acupressurist,” the side hustle that GadgetGuy’s got all lined up for prospective Acu-Point purchasers. “Not only will this make you the most popular person around the workplace, but it might also score you some extra dough,” says Gadget Guy. “Rent your pen out in little sessions, and it’ll pay for itself.”

What is geocaching?

Posted Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 05:14PM

geocaching.jpg

Dubbed “the sport where you are the search engine,” this adventure game involves individuals or groups setting up caches throughout the world and sharing location of each on the Internet. With the help of a GPS unit, other players then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Inside the cache, you’ll find a logbook (which, according to game rules, players must use to write about their finding) and - according to The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site - possibly items such as “maps, books, software, hardware, CD’s, videos, pictures, money, jewelry, tickets, antiques, tools, games, etc.” In addition to taking something from the cache, you’re required to leave something behind as well.

A recent post Jestcaching, a blog that’s all about geocaching, offers this guide to finding your first cache. Among the advice:

“You probably want to dress appropriately for the area you are visiting and pack a few essentials to take with you. As a minimum you should take some paper and a pen/pencil and extra batteries for the GPS. If you are going during the week after dinner you should take a flashlight or headlamp along in case it gets dark while you are in the woods. Things look a whole lot different in the dark than they do in the light. A bottle of water is always a good thing to take along and if bugs are prevalent in your area some Deet is a good idea. You might want to bring a small trinket along to trade when you find the cache.

We Core Tomaytoes, You Core Tomaaahtoes

tomatocorer.jpgSometimes it’s the little things that matter most. So discovered Sam of the super food blog Becks & Posh as she put one of these handy tomato corers to use:
“What a great tool! Who would have known? It’s so small and unassuming. Why on earth have I spent 20 odd years cutting around the tomato core inefficiently with a knife? Duh!”
Now, Sam’s an expat Brit, so while most of us here stateside are coring to-MAY-toes with this nifty little gadget, Sam will be busily coring her to-MAAAH-toes. No need to call the whole thing off, so long as we all get lovely, ready-to-slice love apples from our new favorite tool.

Mouthing off on ThisNext

Ever since first discovering Breath Palette’s product line at Le Pink a few months back, I’ve noticed a fun little trend emerging in the generally unfun world of dental health. Companies like Breath Palette – whose toothpaste flavors include Indian curry, café au lait, Japanese plum, and lavender – are bringing a little glamour and style to the uber-mundane task of keeping your pearly whites nice and bright. Here, some very toothsome ThisNext picks – some fancy, some a little more practical - that just might inspire us to finally start flossing with some regularity and make our dentists damn proud.

Krups Juicer

krups-juicer.jpgIf we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times: Better products make for better living. Even the humble citruc juicer can be improved upon, and Elise at Simply Recipes’ Krups model is a very evolved gadget indeed. The motor is pressure-activated and auto-reversing, and it can hold up to four cups of fresh-squeezed juice. So, Elise, when are we coming over for mimosas?

Improbable research

cushion.jpgMark Abrahams of Improbable Research believes in making people laugh and think.  He (and his editorial board of 50 award-winning scientists and one convicted felon) do this thorugh their print publication, The Journal of Improbable Research, and through their daily blog.   You wouldn’t call is green living, exactly – or even serious, exactly – but the research the reference is no-kidding, actual stuff going on in the world of research and invention…including this remarkable innovation, a chair cushion that filters, umm, unpleasant biological gasses.  Talk about your Magical Mystery Tour…

usbdictionary.jpgBack in MY day, i used to have to go all the way to my bookshelf, go through every title, find the one that said dictionary, and then i even had to look it up by flipping pages to find the word i needed.

But today’s kids have it so good, they can have that books worth of words, on a usb key around their neck. This is the new Merriam Webster by Franklin. Discovered this over at Gadgets Weblog.

[or, they could go to something like dictionary.com if they have internet]

_sonypspsony_whiteiscoming_ad.jpgHave you heard the news? Sony’s new PSP ads are once again stirring up controversy, this time in the form of racial tension. “The latest in a long line of questionable marketing decisions by Sony, this ad — gracing the streets of Amsterdam and the Dutch PSP site — promotes the upcoming white PSP with the racially charged image of a white woman grabbing a black woman’s face. ” We’re not sure quite what to make of this… but its some juicy gadget news found over on The Gadget Blog.
