Ugly Dolls
Posted Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 06:03PMAre you in to the “ugly”? I mean ugly dolls. Because I’ve been a fan of the “ugly” for quite some time…it started with the treasure troll. Remember those ugly faced trolls from the 90’s with ugly faces and crazy afros? I honestly wasn’t obsessive over them but I had two little miniature troll dolls and I still have them. One has a guitar and rainbow mohawk and the other is a “baby troll” with a huge fuschia afro. Alas…they are sort of like collectible and appear on pint glasses…pretty ugly but pretty cool stuff.
Let me introduce you to the new “uglies” in town they are called the “Ugly dolls” and apparently they’re here to stay! They are ugly and they are cute as hell! Confuzzled yet? Don’t be. You’ve seen them. They look like something you might have made in arts in crafts or learned to stitch together from that D.I.Y. book you picked up at Michael’s Art Store, but no…the ugly is no mistake and tho the success of the Ugly doll was not intentional it has been quite successful.
Here’s a quick snippet from xk9.com to fill you in on the beginnings of the “ugly doll phenomenon”:
” The story of the birth of the Ugly doll is a legend in designer toy lore. David Horvath sent doodles as part of love letters to his girlfriend Sun-Min Kim, whose visa situation had forced her to return to her native Korea. In reply, Sun-Min fashioned one of the characters, the apron-clad Wage (to my knowledge the only Uglydoll who is also a Freemason) and sent to David as a gift. Soon the couple were reunited in Los Angeles and they began to make some of these plush uglies by hand. The first were sold at Giant Robot’s flagship store on Sawtelle.”
If you don’t have one of these ugly dolls in your possession…get one! I use my larger “Ugly” as a pillow and have given many of these awesome plush uglies as gifts…they’re always a hit!

Toys To Make The Lorax Proud
Posted Friday, March 2, 2007 at 09:49AMHollywood may have just gotten around to going green, but lovers of The Lorax have long known the importance of protecting the planet from pollution and other environmental ills. One of Dr. Seuss’s most favorite creations, the 1971 classic tells the tale of a mossy, bossy character who “speaks for the trees” and strives to protect them from being obliterated by the greedy Once-ler.
Adopted as a cautionary fable by environmentalists the world over, The Lorax is also adored by ThisNexters such as ckilgore: “Long before saving the earth became a global concern,” she notes, “Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth’s natural beauty.”
To honor Dr. Seuss’s way-ahead-of-his-time eco-smarts, shop green when you’re next seeking out a treat for your child, niece, or nephew - or any other budding treehugger in your life. ThisNexter mdh2992 has added enough selections to create her own green-kid gift guide: From fair-trade, nontoxic Wooden Sorting Toys and Stacking Toys to a Wildlife Tree Puzzle handcrafted from an environmentally-friendly hardwood, this shopcaster’s got the goods on toys that tread oh-so-lightly on Mama Earth. One of her coolest - and most Lorax-league - finds: the Trees-To-Be Seed Kit from Greenfeet. Including “everything you need to start and grow your own magnificent tree,” the kit is available in gingko and yule seeds.

Shopcaster Shout: DWilliams picks The Toys Of Summer
Posted Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 05:44AMI just had to give a shout out to ThisNexter dwilliams’ super-cool, super-geeky (but in a good 4th grade science class way) shopcast The Toys Of Summer.
For those of us not on the East or West coasts, summer seems like a fair distant dream- a cruel joke - as we trudge through rain and snow. For a little winter-time day dreaming, check out this fun and youthful list shopcasted ironically by the CEO of Red Scream Films, a horror films production company. My faves are the Solar Shuttle (literally a flying trash bag which I could no doubt play with for hours) and the Build Your Own Hot Air Balloon.
A refreshing break from all the techno toys out there for kids these days, The Toys Of Summer will make you want to get that Christmas list back out and put smiles on all the faces of the kids and kids-at-heart you know and love.

Go Ahead, Grab It!
Posted Sunday, January 7, 2007 at 08:50AMWhen babies cross the 6 month mark, things really start to get fun. They discover their feet, they discover they can grab stuff (like your hair) with their hands, and they start learning to play by themselves which is an indescribable gift to parents.
This is also the time where you & close relatives start mad running about town gleefully purchasing every 6M toy in the hopes to see a smile cross the baby’s face when you put it in their hands and they wave it around and smash it on your lap. I’m not being sarcastic here, it’s a hoot to watch them grow.
I was struck by the pretty and classic design of this wood Clutching Toy recommended by blogger MC Milker in her Crunchy Kids Toys list, who says it’s her “favorite ring for babies”.
It’s such a simple toy, but it’s got all the right colors for babies in development, and it really edits down the noise a lot of toys can bring with too much going on. It’s handcrafted in Germany and made of beechwood and kid-friendly paint.
Snag one up, and which them smile and drool. Oh, they grow up so fast.

Don't Forget Your Loyal Friend
Posted Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 02:12AM
My puppy, East, would like to tell you something: “Arf, arf aroof. Woof bow wow.”
Isn’t he brilliant? And eloquent? He’s so right to remind us that dogs like Chrismas as much as people do and shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to gift-buying.
What’s that, East?
“Yip, woofity arf arf!”
Of course, buddy. You do give us the gift if unquestioning devotion every waking moment. None is more deserving of a holiday treat than you, my fine, furry friend.
“Arfoomph. Woooofoofoof.”
Yes, we know you’re capable of the world’s most dramatic guilt trip if ignored. We remember your ability to lay on the floor and sigh the saddest sighs all too well (drama queen alert!). So, no, one present is not too much to ask. You were so polite you may deserve two. Just, maybe, in return, would it be possible for you to not say, “I love you,” to the mailman quite so loudly next year?
“Grrr! Grrroof! ThisNext wish list!”
What’s that, boy? Did you say, “ThisNext wish list?” Aren’t you a clever online shopper! Of course I’ll refer to your ThisNext wish list for gift ideas!
East’s wish list:

Gift Idea: Rocking Boat
Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 09:52AM
Thanks to ThisNext, I’ll be doing almost 90% of my Christmas shopping online this year, and I can’t wait!
Since Halloween is semi-unofficially the gateway into Holiday madness (starting the holiday season on Thanksgiving is sooo 1953), today marks my first entry for 2006 Holiday Season Gift Ideas. All items will of course be available on the web, priced with your bank account in mind, and (imho) sure to warm the cuckolds of you and yours.
So…HOW WONDERFUL IS THIS ROCKING BOAT??? Why WHY do kids get all the cool stuff?? I gotta think that if I could fold all 6ft of me into this classic, wooden rocking boat, all instances of writers block and un-creativity would be immediately thwarted.
That said, there isn’t a kid around that wouldn’t love to have this in their play room. Plus, it’s built for two - so if you want to combine a gift for a sibling duo that’s easy to share, timelessly fun and classically designed, then this is for you. I can’t hardly believe it’s $139.
Available at Hearth Song

Fun New Finds For Kids and Parents
Posted Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 09:45PM
I gotta think our mothers must all be slightly annoyed with the state of parenting today. I mean, there is just so much great stuff for kids and parents to make life infinitely easier.
Gone are the days of 1000 pound strollers, scratchy baby clothes and ill-fitting diapers. And toy chests? That’s so 1901. Today’s toy catch all must be a mix of form and function. Like these animal bags from Boon discovered by the modern-parenting-meets-modern-design blog coochicoos,

Mood Beans
Posted Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 03:00AM
Mood Beams! They look liike ambient device’s orbs ~ but with more character - loads more character. Their manufacturers site describes them as “Basically Mood Beams are a funky tribe of supremely portable, battery-operated characters that cycle through a spectrum of hypnotic colours. They’re also sensitive to sound, so if you put them next to your radio or CD player they’ll change colour in time to the beat of the music. Mood Beams can be set to perform at five different speeds: Heartbeat, Rainbow, Strobe, Colour Dance and Colour Hold - simply set the mode to suit the mood.”
Are they toys? are they tech? How do you categorize such a creature? RUGenius said on NOTCOT.org that they were the modernized Glow Worms (remember those?)… and Linhchi fell for the adorable ghostly orange one. As for me? It feels like high-tech, yet is rather low-tech if you’re comparing it to the wifi/ambient syncing up to info all around the world devices… but when it comes to emotional impact, it seems to do the trick. They can sit on your desk, perched on your monitor just glowing different colors - color therapy is in - this could keep you calm through the work day! Amuse your kids! Baffle the dog! and still dance and pulsate to the music, or just be a fun way to light the room… and sure to put a smile on your face.

Red W(h)ine and Boo
Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 at 12:10PM
Andrea and Emily UG of Red, W(h)ine and Boo are two progressive moms blogging about life at large and the raising of their two babies, Boo and Red, who may be the cutest baby on the planet. And they’re blatantly honest, too: they are careful to recommend good baby-raising tools an educational toys, like the Leapfrog Learn-Around Playground…but they also freely admit that Boos’ current fave toy is a piece of direct mail and a left-over party favor. “So the moral of this story,: Mama Em says, “next birthday all gifts will be either purchased at the dollar tree, sent to us as junk mail, or dug out of some dusty back room and regifted. Yay for Mommies budget!”

Creepy Dunny
Posted Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 04:47PM
Toy lover or not, its been hard to avoid seeing the Dunny characters around, and they tend to have quite a following of collectors - and designers! Almost every Dunny you see, has probably been designed by someone different… and this creepy little Dunny is one of a hand customized ARMY of them. Artist. Drilone, made a set of 30 R.I.P. Dunny characters (with matching Kozik smoking Labbits) - and actually hand cut each ear, eye, tooth, and nose out of each one. Toy Bot Studios has a series of pictures from the artist, and of their own!Tags: *Technology/Gadgets, Toy Bot Studios, toys

AdFunture
Posted Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 04:40PM
I’ve been seeing it around the toys/vinyls blogs - and even trandspotting newsletters about who had it first - is this collectible designer toy phenomenon, the western world showing asian influences? Or did they start into the designer collectible market following some of our other trends? None the less its an international trend now! And still very exciting when the publicity spreads across the continents. Over at AdFunture, their Devilrobot Flings just made the cover of X-Cup Magazine in Taiwan! A Mommy Story
Posted Monday, August 14, 2006 at 10:48AM
Christina’s A Mommy Story is just hilarious. And accurate. And true-to-life. And thought Christina doesn’t actually recommend the Blue’s Clues plush, it is already the center of her toddler’s life and that cause of much insanity…while she doesn’t really say you should give Glenlivet to your baby when she’s teething. But if you want to see what it’s really like to have a just-turned-two-year-old around the house… read on.

Vinyl Abuse
Posted Friday, August 11, 2006 at 04:54PM
It’s a misleading name really. There is no abuse of vinyl going on at Vinyl Abuse, more the opposite, the constant featuring of amazing boundary pushing designer toys elevating what vinyl can provide as a medium to work with. Like these Squbes, designed by Ferg of Jamungo, part cube, part skull, all vinyl.
