Madame Fortuna Relic Necklace
Posted Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 10:13PMI first spotted Madame Fortuna’s “Relic” line at a great little shop called Sleep in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and immediately asked the sales lady who designed them. All the Relics are delicate hand-blown glass globes that contain a meaningful object - a Victorian die-cut, a petit-point rose, a scoop of red soil or yellow coral, or my favorite, an exquisite little feather from a robin, peacock, or cardinal.
The prefab pieces are seriously breathtaking, but Madame Fortuna will also custom-make a Relic from the tiny object of your choice - putting an elegant new spin on the time capsule. It’s early to start thinking about Valentine’s Day and all, but I can tell you now that no woman on earth can resist a personalized memento housed in a pretty little sphere - as long as it’s in good taste, of course (hint: not her medication).
From $175 at Etsy.

te quiero, papi
Posted Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 10:10PM
Rare is the Father’s Day gift that might delight the giver just as much as her hubby/babydaddy. So if your man’s already got enough golf clubs and neckties, and you’re into the selfish sharing thing, consider the Te Quiero, Papi gift set from Carol’s Daughter. The almond oil and ylang-ylang shaving lotion, tui hair oil, and vanilla sandalwood shea souffle and eau de toilette are all sure to gloriously groom your guy, but their heavenly scents should entice you to indulge every now and again as well.
Also available: the Fit for a King set (with fancy soap and all sorts of royally skin-smoothing lotions) and the Big Kahuna set (featuring some Hawaiian-ginger-infused products perfect for surfer dad).

greeting cards as decor
Posted Monday, May 14, 2007 at 08:20AM
Sadly discovered just a wee bit too late for Mother’s Day, Gagatree’s Winter Garden pop-ups are some of the sweetest greeting cards I’ve ever seen. Mailed just like a regular card, the prettily printed paper wonders unfold into keepsake ornaments (watch how it works here). I like the one with bunnies best, but there are also kitties and squirrels and butterflies and birds.

good fortune
Posted Monday, May 7, 2007 at 10:26AM
So you no longer have to fake like you actually know the meaning of those leaves left lingering in your tea cup: the Tea for Two set by Atelier Daguerre has tealeaf reading hints inscribed right inside its two porcelain cups. The saucers, meanwhile, offer a dictionary of symbols and their meanings. A lovely Mom’s Day gift for the tea lover, and one that might actually inspire some sweet old fashioned mother-daughter bonding time.

maman...je t'aime
Posted Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 09:10PM
For the francophile mom: the Basic French Adult Wish bracelet, a sweet little piece of satin silkscreened with a message scrawled just for the recipient - en francais, bien sûr.
With its lovely fuschia ribbon, the Mother’s-Day-perfect Adult Wish reads “Maman…je t’aime” (“Mommy…I love you”). But there’s a bunch of bracelets for other occasions (or non-occasions). Some of our favorites: “Je voeux des fraises” (“I wish for strawberries”), “Je te voeux” (“I want you”), and the somewhat intense “Jolie Princesse Voeux Namoureux…pour cros calins” (“Pretty Princess wishes for a Lover…for big snuggles”). Whoa.

a more refined rabbit
Posted Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 08:40AM
Peter Cottontail may have some company on the bunny trail this year. The ever-fabulous Vosges Haut-Chocolat has introduced a line of “exotic bunnies”, all of whom are so much more enticing than that hollow Easter rabbit who’s been stubbornly turning up in your basket since forever.
For a more epicurean Easter, Vosges gives us the Volcano Rabbit (made with all the ancho and chipotle chillies, Ceylon cinnamon, and dark chocolate of their Red Fire bars), the Black-Naped Hare (curry and coconut and milk chocolate, oh my), the Ryukyu Rabbit (a friend of the Black Pearl bar, featuring ginger, wasabi, dark chocolate, and black sesame seeds), the Italian Hare (with straight-outta-Sicily hazelnuts, almonds, and milk chocolate), and the Tarragona European Rabbit (satisfying both savory and sweet cravings with his Hickory smoked almonds, grey sea salt, and milk chocolate).
Adopt four bunnies and you get one bunny free. And all their ears are extra-long and so adorably floppy - all the better to be bitten off first.

V Day with Your BFF
Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 at 07:18PMThere’s a reason why “BFF” isn’t text message-ese for “boy friend forever.”
Though I love you fellas.
Nope, your BFF is your best friend for ever (and a day), so skip spending your time hunting for wearable chocolates and edible lingerie for your boy, and invest your Valentine time and money in your true love.
You could do her a box of See’s candy heart chocolates, though I know my platonic lover would play polite - smile, “Thanks,” trash - but have none of that.
We like to keep fit for each other.
ThisNexter Chantel gets it:
“Girls should get practical and sparkly gifts for Valentine’s Day.”
Type that a little louder, I want everyone to hear you. Shiny shiny is key.
“Buy her a [Aspects butterfly-print suede clutch],” says Chantel, “she’ll use it and think of you a lot longer than she would trying to lose the weight from the chocolate.

Good-for-you Valentines
Posted Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 08:48AMWhen Valentine’s Day comes around, all I want is Hershey’s Valentine Hearts. And though I’ll probably forever adore those chocolate-covered, heart-shaped, red-foil-wrapped pieces of love, I’m beginning to grow fonder of the kind of Valentine’s treats you can’t find in the drugstore aisles. To go for a gift that’s a little less likely to make your beau or ladylove drift off into a sugar coma, here’s how to have a healthier Heart Day this year.
If you’re going to give flowers, go the green route and order a bouquet of blooms from OrganicBouquet.com. Says salvo: “Organic Bouquet is a very socially responsible company that promotes environmentally safe products and donates a portion of its proceeds to charity.” And not only are their roses “beautiful and pesticide-free,” says breastcancerfund - their proceeds also help to benefit breast cancer research. You can even choose to pair your purchase with a dozen organic dark chocolates infused with strawberries, red raspberries, and marionberries. A heart-smarter choice than milk chocolate, the dark variety “contains more antioxidants (substances that slow aging by delaying damage done to blood vessels that can cause heart disease and cancer),” says Healthy Heart.

got gift card?
Posted Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at 01:31PMIt’s been three days, and you’re still bummed out about that gift card you received?
You wished for Saks but received The Sports Authority?
Trade it in. Yes, trade it in for another gift card. CardAvenue.com will buy, sell or trade your gift card. You can take your pick from the list of cards others traded in. Believe it or not, somebody out there wants that card from Sports Authority.
Ssshhh… Noone has to know about the switcheroo (except you and me).

Wake Up and Smell the New Year
Posted Monday, December 25, 2006 at 05:04PM
Still scrambling for last-minute gifts? Dude, it’s Christmas Day. Ain’t no elf coming to your rescue. OK, OK, take a breath, step back a bit. The holidays aren’t over. In fact, you can separate from the pack by doing something thoughtful and interesting for New Year’s rather than Christmas. Lara Ferroni at A Nice Cuppa has it dialed in. We’ve spoken about home-roast coffee before, and if you’re anything like me (and you know you are), the one day of the entire year you need a good cuppa is when you break the seal of crust on your eyelids at whatever hour on January 1. So go, go buy some nice jars, some good green coffee, roast it up and make a nice New Year’s gift to recover your good graces. Cuz come a week from today, you are so on your own. You’re welcome. Buddy up
Posted Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 08:01PM
Here’s an addendum to our yoga lovers’ gift guide: Yoga Buddy, the cheerily colored yoga blocks recommended by Squire of Binsted. “I used to use them stacked up to sit on whilst I meditated,” explains our shopcaster. “I now find just one more comfortable, so I keep one at my house and one at my girlfriend’s.” Perfect for keeping your spine straight in sitting postures, the blocks are “very light and a good mix of firm and comfortable,” according to the good squire.

Gift Guide: Good-for-you grub
Posted Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 08:31PMFruitcake’s just dandy, but there’s a whole world of giftworthy grub that offers more than just densely packed sugar. To treat health-conscious friends or family members, go for food gifts that both taste deelish and deliver good-for-you stuff like antioxidants, healthy fats, dark chocolate, fruits, and nuts. The Whole Foods Gift Basket, for instance, includes almond butter, blackberry preserves, salsa, dried cranberries, and a slew of other snacks far more appealing and heart-smart than WisPride spreadable cheese and Hickory Farms Sausage Delights.

Great Finds for Under $50
Posted Monday, December 18, 2006 at 10:38AMChristmas is one week away, and you’re almost at panic point (almost, because we know about and love expedited shipping!). Unfortunately, your reliable savior is going to cost you some money, which puts a little dent in your budget for the actual gifts. Ah, the trade-off. No worries. Check out the great, unique gifts ThisNext readers have suggested. These gifts suggested by some of my ThisNext pals are light on the wallet but illicit a big “Wow.”
“Because it’s gorgeous, living, biotech, and who can say no to a hands-off no-maintenance orchid in a test tube?”
Not just gorgeous, but how absolutely fun is this gift? I love it because as it grows, the gift keeps on giving.
“Wrap someone you love in organic cotton scarves in gorgeous cable knit patterns. Feel warm, feel good and do a little something for the planet.”
“I’ve had my eye on these for a while! I love the transparent effect of a glass-within-a-glass. It’s about finding the beauty in everyday things. When I finally have a home - not an apartment - they WILL be mine!”
For this great price, you can send six glasses (3 sets) and still meet your budget.
“I pretty much just heart this a lot. Good is for people who heart things.”
Since your $20 subscription goes to a nonprofit (you get to select), this gift has many recipients.

The girly-girl tent
Posted Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 10:15AM
Bath salts and balms and beauty serums aren’t the only rose-kissed gifts you can give this season. For the more rugged rose-lover, there’s the Ted Baker Rose Print Tent from Blacks. Sure to be the most lovely tent at your campsite, the two-berth dome features a porch for gear storage and breathable polyester inner with storage pockets - plus it’s got SPF 30 protection. ThisNexter mouseking finds the tent so pretty that “I think I’ll set one up in my living room for a few days!” And it would be so very perfect to take to Coachella next year…

Gift Guide: Box sets
Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 09:49PMSometimes it’s hard to try to justify shelling out the cash to purchase a box set by one of your favorite bands or artists. Chances are you’ve already got all their albums nicely alphabetized on your shelf, maybe even a few imports and bootlegs as well. But what about those precious never-before-released tracks? And the outtakes, the rarities, the pages of riveting-to-read liner notes? For those who can’t live without such treasures, CD box sets are a definite crowd-pleaser.
The box set displayed most prominently in my home, Nirvana’s With The Lights Out features 61 songs on three CDs, including such highlights as a fantastically sloppy live rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker,” a scary-genius nine-minute-plus demo of “Scentless Apprentice,” and Kurt Cobain’s solo acoustic version of “Opinion.” The accompanying DVD’s a prize too, especially when we get to see one of the band’s earliest shows (a set performed in somebody’s living room, with a lightswitch flipped on and off for special effects).

Gift Guide: The at-home spa
Posted Sunday, December 10, 2006 at 01:56PMWhile a spa getaway probably ranks as one of the most rapturously received gifts possible, spa junkies can also be immensely gratified with pampering treats that make staying at home feel as indulgent as a trip to some Spa Finder-approved destination. To start, consider a deliciously soft and cozy robe like the Kashwere Shawl Collar Robe selected by ThisNexter Traci Meyer. Made with microfiber knit, the robe is lightweight and “really yummy,” according to Traci.
