The MacBook: Reloaded

Posted Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 03:39PM

Apple’s MacBook and MacBook Pro both received a bit of a facelift just in time for the Christmas holidays. Slimmer, lighter (0.95” when closed), and more powerful than before, the now eco-friendly notebooks are machined out of a single piece of aluminum which lessens production waste and just adds to the overall coolness. The displays are now LED-backlit giving them uniform brightness and reducing their energy consumption.

Beyond the green modifications, the touchpads for both MacBooks are larger and support multi-touch. Toss in a more powerful video card and it’s hard to go elsewhere when considering a laptop purchase.

ByeTunes?

Posted Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 12:25PM

Apple is threatening to terminate its iTunes service if the Copyright Royalty Board increases publisher compensation to 15 cents per digital download. The National Music Publisher Association is seeking a bigger share for its members after the expiration of the 10-year agreement that pegged royalty rates at 9 cents.

If the rate hike passes and record labels do not absorb the premium, Apple contends that their service will steep into unprofitability which clearly is not cool for Steve Jobs and crew. Well, why not raise prices? Apple is convinced that their 99 cent flat pricing scheme is a large part of their service’s allure. Though it’s a nominal difference of 6 cents, 99¢ compared to $1.05 is a considerably different price point in the minds of consumers. Though their per-sale revenue will increase, the volume of sales will likely decrease which will send their break-even business into the red. Also likely is that the measure will have the counterproductive effect of sending consumers back to peer-to-peer communities for pirated music.

The Board will reach a decision later today. We’ll see what happens.

Apple Time Capsule

Posted Sunday, January 20, 2008 at 09:46PM

This years MacWorld seems to have kicked off at a higher note. Despite the main focus being the MacBook Air, Apple unleashed another amazing product, the ‘Apple Time Capsule.’ It will be released on February 1st, although you can pre-order it now at Amazon. The time capsule works wirelessly with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard. It can back-up and store files for each leopard based Mac on your wireless network, and with it’s 500GB or 1TB hard drive you will have all the capacity and safety you need.

The Time Capsule also works with PCs, it will mount as a wireless hard drive, so windows users can simply access the Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily. The Time Capsule is also a full-featured 802.11n Wi-Fi base station. Every computer in your house can work off a wireless network at blazing speeds. And they can back up wirelessly to the same Time Capsule.

At this year’s MacWorld, some people were expecting that Steve Jobs would unleash an ‘iPhone nano,’ but he instead unleashed something way better than the famous iPhone ‘brick.’ The ‘MacBook Air’ is being dubbed the world thinnest laptop; measuring 0.16-0.76 inches and weighing 3.0 pounds.

Yesterday at a special event dubbed ‘The Beat Goes On’ Apple unleashed three new iPod models, launched the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store for both iPod and iPhone together with Starbucks, iPhone ringtones were also added to iTunes, and (Product) Red iPod shuffle, new colors for the shuffle was also part of the news, But the good news to the customers came today. After Steve Jobs had announced a price cut $200 on the iPhone yesterday (8GB iPhone $399 and the 4GB iPhone $299 while supplies last). Today he announced that Apple will issue a $100 in-store credit to all iPhone users who paid full price for the product. (talk about fixing a backlash!). The new iPod models include: iPod nano 3rd generation, iPod Classic, and iPod touch.

The iPod Touch to be honest with you I don’t know what it is really? But it’s thinner than the iPhone, much more solid and it’s all chrome. Available in 8GB & 16GB for $299 and $399 respectively. More info>>>

The iPod Classic is hard-drive based, it’s thin and solid. Available in 80GB & (a thicker) 160GB models. So if you are planning a trip to the Amazon forest or an appearance on the next ‘Survivor reality show,’ the Classic is ideal for you, it has enough music for the jungle. More info>>>

The iPod nano 3rd generation is extra small, with a video. Men personally I prefer the looks of 2nd generation nano, this new gadget has a  2-inch, QVGA, 320 x 240 screens which are 65-percent brighter than previous models and have the highest pixel density apple has ever unleashed (204 pixels per inch). Prices will be $149, and $199 for the 4GB & 8GB respectively. More info>>>

Dear Crumpler Backpack, I Just Can't Crumple You

The King Single - Laptop and Backpack Awesomeness from Crumpler
Dear Crumpler Laptop Backpack … or The King Single, however you really prefer to be addressed:

I want to thank you for finally finding me, after all these years of stumbling around, smashing my previous laptop into sheetrock walls, car seats, hard concrete floors, people’s heads, campsite rocks, and sticky theater floors with only a very thin layer of Army/Navy surplus inbetween it and certain disaster. My old laptop decided to finally leave me altogether, most likely due to the torture and abuse I subjected it with, and really … can you blame her?

More APPLE for all day, every day

Posted Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 07:46AM

Oh boy, oh boy.  The day we’ve all been waiting for has dawned.  Apple is going mobile with the iPhone, and TV is getting sexier with Apple TV.

While the iPhone isn’t out just yet, already ThisNexters are salivating excited about the possibilities of this sleek, multifunctional little cell phone which promises to “completely redefine what you can do on a mobile phone.”

JaHaute says the Apple iPhone is “sleek and cute. I’m so sorry for the other phone companies.”

And while asharfin loves the touch screens, “The more applications a gadget has, the more I get to touch the screen, which is why I LOVE THE NEW iPHONE!!” Kristopher Dukes is all about the style, “And here your K thought nothing more smartly spelled S-E-X for a boss lady than a very little black dress and skyscraper heels.”

Check out Engadget’s full report and fabulous pictures of Apple’s announcement with details on how the magic will work.

In the meantime, Alyson and I are pretty into Apple’s other announcement, AppleTV. According to Engadget (which is covering everything Mac right now),

Not just one, two or three but five computers can connect to the Apple TV box, making a true hub for all your PCs. You can watch content stored on your rig — movies, TV shows, photos, etc. — and you can also pull streaming vid directly off sites like…Apple.com! Plus, the box will even grab content from PCs outside of your house — finally, we can watch all the great swag that our rich friends can afford. Interested? You’ll be able to grab one immediately for $299.

Will the iPhone and AppleTV be the new revolution we’ve been waiting for? Only time will tell.

Gift Guide 06: An Apple A Day

Posted Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 08:44PM

As a recent conver to the Mac world, I would be quite the happy camper if my boxes and stocking were filled with anything Apple.  From iPods to wireless accessories to computers, Apple is truly the gift that keeps giving.  And, as we all know anything Apple related has a definitive style all it’s own - giving techie gifts never looked so good.

For that really special someone on your list, a MacBook or MacBook Pro (for someone really REALLY special) all wrapped up with a bow would make said special someone love you forever.

Apple Picking

Posted Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 09:19PM

seedlingfruit.jpgThere’s something about the turn of the season, when summer wanes and fall begins to unveil its multicolor coat, when there’s a new crispness in the air and the scent of spice rides on the breeze. It’s this time of year that I truly crave apples. (And I don’t mean the computers or the iPods – I crave those all year long.) Evidently, I’m not alone. Perhaps it’s apt the apple is the symbol of original sin, for apples clearly inspire passion and lust among their devotees.

If it’s apple season then it must be apple pie season, but not just any apple will do. Janinemaclachlan narrows her focus even to one grower, Seedling Fruit Farms. “His staff coined the term ‘holy trinity of pie apples’ and now my crisps feature Golden Grimes, Ida Red and Northern Spy as long as the season holds.” Expat Brit überfoodie Sam of Becks & Posh got her knickers in a twist when she found Bramley cooking apples at her local farmer’s market. Known all too well to English cooks, Bramleys retain their robust flavor and firm texture when cooked, making for “the best apple pie you’ve never yet had.”

Baking is an apple’s best friend, and pie is just the tip of the iceberg. The inimitable Chockylit at Cupcake Bakeshop concocted some crafty caramel apple cupcakes, filled with cream cheese frosting and glazed with caramel icing. I’ll take that over a real caramel apple any day. Contrasting with Chockylit’s diminutive delicacies, Hungry Magazine hunkers down on a hand-sized apple fritter from Chicago’s Old Fashioned Donuts, “dotted with toothsome hunks and an orchard’s worth of apple perfume.”

appleshuffle.pngAt ThisNext, it would be embarassing not to know what’s next ~ given the implication in our name and all ~ so i’m delighted to see that when the latest tech announcement hits, our community is on it enough to start picking it. Within hours of Steve Job’s latest slew of announcements, the Apple Shuffle got picked! (not only picked, but also tagged sexy!)

Caramel Apple Cupcakes

Posted Monday, September 11, 2006 at 10:47AM

applecupcake.jpgThe first hint of the snap of cool fall air is upon us. We love autumn, and more importantly we love the foods of autumn. The time has begun to shift focus from luscious stone fruit to crisp apples and warm spices.

We’re salivating like Pavlovian dogs over these caramel apple cupcakes, stick and all, as could only be brought to us by the cupcake goddess herself, Chockylit of Cupcake Bakeshop. It’s a great paean to the flavors of fall, without the sticky store-bought caramel coating that pulls your filling out. Also better than bobbing for apples. Who needs all that water up the nose anyway.

Better to Have Loved and Lost ...

bjthecone.jpgWe really appreciate bloggers that love — and we mean really LOVE — their products. The exceedingly hilarious Marvo at The Impulsive Buy has gone so far as to forge a deep, personal relationship with his newest BFF, the Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough The Cone. All we can say is, with a name like that, it better be good! Sadly, Marvo has to contend, as we all do occasionally, with the pain of losing friends by way of consuming them, but at least there’s more where that comes from.

Oh, and definitely check out his review of the groady-sounding grape-flavored apple product Grapple, if only to experience Mother Nature as a foul-mouthed hip-hop gangbanger bitch. Word!

Apple + Levis = ?

Posted Sunday, July 23, 2006 at 11:27PM

ipodlevis_qjgenth.jpgApple + Nike came  earlier - to now be followed by Apple + Levis? We always knew wearable was hot, but it was a matter of time before it broke from the research art/grad school/fashion kids and took on a  corporate life of its own. So apparently the iPod Levis will debut this fall… rumors are flying about a joystick in the watch pocket. What’s next? via the Quick Journal Blog of Blogs.
