checkin' in with the peeps

Robins may be considered the harbinger of spring, but I always associate the turn of season with another bird: The marshmallow Peep. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, these extruded sugary confections herald the approach of Easter like no other avian augury.
Purists may stick with the traditional yellow, maybe even allowing for the occasional pink to color the mix, but manufacturer Just Born continues to churn out new breeds every year. This year’s new color is a springy green, all festive and bright, as well as some cocoa-flavored bunny Peeps. (Of course, we all know bunnies don’t peep; they cluck.)
But the big news this year is the introduction of — wait for it — sugar-free Peeps, sweetened with Splenda.
Now, there are those that would argue that a Peep without sugar is like a headless chocolate bunny — pointless. I’m all for finding ways to increase pleasure while reducing calories, but this little experiment may have gone too far. As Stephanie Lucianovic notes in Chow’s The Grinder, these Frankenpeeps have drawn vitriol for their flavor, texture and, um, unfortunate digestive impact. But perhaps most upsetting is that the removal of sugar by extension results in the removal of the trademark gritty, sugary coating, replaced instead with a coating that is “smooth, with no discernible grit and has strange looking translucent flakes.” Yum.
I’ll stick with the full-sugar version, thank you very much. Oh, and stale, of course.

Good-for-you Valentines
Posted Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 08:48AMWhen Valentine’s Day comes around, all I want is Hershey’s Valentine Hearts. And though I’ll probably forever adore those chocolate-covered, heart-shaped, red-foil-wrapped pieces of love, I’m beginning to grow fonder of the kind of Valentine’s treats you can’t find in the drugstore aisles. To go for a gift that’s a little less likely to make your beau or ladylove drift off into a sugar coma, here’s how to have a healthier Heart Day this year.
If you’re going to give flowers, go the green route and order a bouquet of blooms from OrganicBouquet.com. Says salvo: “Organic Bouquet is a very socially responsible company that promotes environmentally safe products and donates a portion of its proceeds to charity.” And not only are their roses “beautiful and pesticide-free,” says breastcancerfund - their proceeds also help to benefit breast cancer research. You can even choose to pair your purchase with a dozen organic dark chocolates infused with strawberries, red raspberries, and marionberries. A heart-smarter choice than milk chocolate, the dark variety “contains more antioxidants (substances that slow aging by delaying damage done to blood vessels that can cause heart disease and cancer),” says Healthy Heart.

Candy Cane Kisses
Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 at 05:17PM
Silly thing, you though seasonal candy went out of vogue with the pumpkins and costumes, dintcha? Well, leave it to Hershey’s to marry two classics holiday sweets: Candy canes and chocolate. Sweet white chocolate with crunchy bits of minty candy canes, you say? Tgubbins at news you can eat kisses and tells:
“they’re unique enough that it’s easy to keep eating them, possibly even beyond the point where you still like them. but - and let me state the obvious here - they’re good 4 people who like mint.”
But do they freshen your breath?

We want candy
Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 01:59PM
It’s almost Halloween, and that means one thing: Candy. And lots of it.
Needless to say, the candy bloggers are all atwitter. After all, Halloween is the Christmas of candy. Cybele at the aptly named Candy Blog is doing all Halloween candy, all week, kicking it off with Brachs Autumn Mix, a veritable cornucopia of candy corn, Indian corn and candy pumpkins. She’s a tad tepid on these sweets; Rebecca at Sugarhog favors them somewhat more . But for the final word on candy corn connoisseurship, Sugar Savvy stacks up the kernels in a confectionary smackdown. A candy corn better than Brach’s? You might be surprised … (And be sure to read the quote from Louis Black for a good chuckle, too.)
