They are made of 100% cotton, measure 32” x 64”, and together with the matching his & hers flip flops $14.00, they would make a good gift for a Bridal shower or a wedding anniversary. Hef’s got nothing on your dad - Clooney’s on speed dial, the Lexus LF-A’s on hold, and every suit he wears is a power suit. What do you get for a guy like that?

Gift Guide: Mucho Monopoly

Posted Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 09:43AM

It’s coming down to the wire for Holiday shopping, and you may still have a few unchecked loved ones on your “to gift” list.  Plus, there are hostess gifts, office presents - and then we gotta start thinking about New Years…

IMHO, a classic board game is always a great gift - plus, if you shop around you can get loads of great board games for under $20.

Like a lot of the classic games, Monopoly has quite a few themed editions that just might make a few ‘fanatics’ (and I mean that in a good way) smile.

For The Wino Wine Lover: Wineopoly!!
Recommended by our very own Delicious Life, why trade houses and railroads, when you can trade bottles of vino, and argue about Import Taxes?

Gift Guide: Stamps for the Stocking

Posted Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 06:12AM

.

Thanks to Martha and the DIY Network and Crafsters.org, the world has gotten quite a bit more crafty in the last few years.  Me, I’m just kind of a long for the ride - thanks to a few failed attempts at candle making, knitting and a very brief but expensive venture in jewelry.  Sadly, my crafty talents lie primarily in appreciation, or in the very very basic application.

Like stamps.

Stamps really just put it all out there for you, don’t they?  I mean even I can choose a pretty ink pad - place the stamp on top - and then conceivably choose an appropriate place on a note card, envelope or other paper product to imprint the image.  Not to diminish the really talented multi-layerd stampers out there (who are probably also screen printing their own clothing…I’m so jel) but the stamp and ink pad is pretty much Crafting 101.  And that’s just fine with me.

Plus, stamps are really pretty, last forever, and make fun affordable gifts. Especially stocking stuffers.

Last, last-minute gifts

Posted Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 03:54PM

giftybox.jpgWait, Christmas is when?? Crap — mere days before the big day, and you’re not done shopping. Anita at Married … with Dinner’s got your back. Order up one of these clever little Giftyboxes for a tasty treat that will titillate well into the new year. Nab the Classes & Workshop Giftybox for a pass to a food-and-drink-related workshop at one of many venues across the country, as well as discounts at many others; or go all wine country with the Wine Tour & Tasting Giftybox, perfect for the traveling tippler.

Anita brings up another good gift option that we wholeheartedly endorse: We of course already mentioned the fabulous Menu for Hope program, which runs through this Friday. We’re sure you’ve already bought up bunches of tickets for the prizes that made you squeal (right?) — so why not spread the love and buy tickets for prizes for others? Of course, you want to buy tickets for things you haven’t bid on — no point in generating too much competition — but with literally hundreds of prizes to choose from, we’re sure you can find something to sneak into someone’s stocking, just in the nick of time.

Last-minute Gift Guide: Kitchen Fixin's

Posted Friday, December 15, 2006 at 06:40PM

Ten days left! Whether you’re looking for the last stocking-stuffers or haven’t even begun your gift list shopping, bloggers and ThisNexters are generous with their recommendations on kitchen gadgets, tools and other goodies.

simplex_cop.gifStraight outta the Wine Country, Jack and Joanna of Fork & Bottle have a comprehensive list of their recommended kitchen gadgets and gifts. This shiny copper kettle caught our eye, not just for its gorgeous luster, but because it actually boils water faster on gas ranges than standard kettles. And who could’t stand to save a buck or two on their gas bill these days?

mandoline.jpgIf you wanna look sharp as a gift-giver, then give something sharp. The inimitable Clotilde at Chocolate & Zucchini has not one, not two but three expansive gift guides. Among the products she just loves is one near and dear to our hearts, a mandoline. If you’ve never used one before, you’ll be amazed how quickly and efficiently you can slice things to perfect thinness. But mind your knuckles, and always use the guide!

cleaver.jpgEveryone needs good knives, whether they know it or not. Eddie Caraeff’s list of things he can’t cook without includes the mightiest knife of all, the Henckels Chinese Cleaver. Now that’s a knife.

Last-minute Gift Guide: Good Taste Tastes Good

Posted Thursday, December 14, 2006 at 02:14PM

Stumped for those last-minute gifts? Lists of recommendations are cropping up all over ThisNext and the blogosphere, showcasing some amazing gift ideas. Whether you want to give something that shows good taste, or something that tastes good, check out these gift guides from all over.

charleschocolate.jpgTopping the good-tasting category has to be chocolate. You pretty much can’t go wrong with it, but if you want to elicit squeals of glee, you gotta go with the good stuff. Quality chocolate will make you look generous; eco-friendly and fair-trade chocolate will make you look like a saint. Emily Stone at Chocolate in Context is extending her friends-and-family discount at Charles Chocolate, saving you 25%. But hurry — the discount ends tomorrow, December 15!

chocolatemice.jpgOf course, presentation counts for lots in the gift-giving category, which is why we love Ed Levine’s recommendation of these adorable chocolate mice from L. A. Burdick Chocolates. They come in three flavors: Dark with orange interior, milk with mocha interior and white with cinnamon interior. Don’t try to eat the tails; they’re silk. No mice were harmed in the making of these chocolates.

cupcakeornaments.jpgSpeaking of sweet stuff, ThisNexter Nichelle is crazy for the cupcakes. (And who isn’t?) Of course, the real deal can be difficult to send to Aunt Mabel in Petaluma, but you can dazzle her with these shimmering blown-glass cupcake ornaments. She’ll savor them for years to come, and they’ll never go stale.

Gift Guide 06: An Apple A Day

Posted Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 08:44PM

As a recent conver to the Mac world, I would be quite the happy camper if my boxes and stocking were filled with anything Apple.  From iPods to wireless accessories to computers, Apple is truly the gift that keeps giving.  And, as we all know anything Apple related has a definitive style all it’s own - giving techie gifts never looked so good.

For that really special someone on your list, a MacBook or MacBook Pro (for someone really REALLY special) all wrapped up with a bow would make said special someone love you forever.

Gift Gide: Books...what to read in '07

Posted Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 10:54PM

Don’t know what to read in ‘07? Well, here’s the perfect remedy for you and the book buffs on your holiday gift list.  We love the end of the year because all the list start to emerge, which means inside scoop on the best of’s.  Here’s a few discoveries from bloggers and book worms on the good reads to carry you into the new year.

Nick Hornby’s The Polysyllabic Spree (Paperback – available 12/10/06) – $12.24
British author Nick Hornby (About a Boy, High Fidelity, Fever Pitch) tells us what books are on his night stand. The Polysyllabic Spree covers a cornucopia of genres from new releases, poems, comics, self-help and sports biographies to the literary classics, Hornby gives us a tour of his literary world in his typical sharp-witted British style.

And seriously, what’s not to love.  Hornby’s work is a sublime and nostalgic take on the quirkiness of love and the bizzarrities of life.   ThisNexter Chantal loves Hornby’s About A Boy…the book and the movie, which she says is “guaranteed to make you laugh on a rainy day.”

Gift Idea: Cute Hoot Sake Set

Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 at 09:33AM

Are you kidding me? I mean, seriously.

There’s cute, and then there is cute. And, ummm…this adorable Owl Sake Set from Anthropologie is c-u-t-e.

As I’ve said before, I’m not usually one for frivolous knick-nacks, but there is something to be said about out pieces that bring a smile to everyone’s face.  Add to that the joys of filling up with hot sake on a cold winter’s night, and frivolous just became multi-functional, and someone just got themselves a fabulous gift.

Lush-ious gift guides

Posted Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 02:15PM

What would the holidays be without a little holiday cheer? It would seem that ThisNexters are a cheerful bunch indeed. We’ve picked up some highlights from a selection of gift guides designed for the tasteful tippler.

chateaustemichelle.jpg When in doubt, wine makes a great gift. Even if you don’t know the tastes and proclivities of your giftee, there’s bound to be a bottle that will be graciously received. Culinary Detective Chris Cognac recommends Chateau Ste Michelle Reserve Chardonnay in his gift guide In the Kitchen with the Common Man. “Delicious and affordable,” says he. A winning combination indeed.

gruet.jpg A bottle of bubbly is an unfailingly classy gift, but you don’t have to break the bank to impress. I’m a big fan of Gruet Brut , a sparkling wine from the otherwise unheard of wine region of New Mexico. You’ll wow your friends with the relative obscurity, and the flavor utterly belies its petite price tag. For more options on inexpensive imbibables, check out my list of Great Cheap Wines.

Gift Guide: Pretty. Grainy. Woodsy.

Posted Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 09:40AM

If you like to add a little feng shui to things, you’ll know that wood is the first of the five elements because it symbolises the beginning of life.  While a true feng shui purist will tell you that living wood is really the only element that can truly evoke proper feng shui, Aunt Beep Shui will tell you that giving a gift of something earthy, woodsy and eco-chic can possibly do just as much to settle the frazzled nerves of your recipient.  Let alone make them smile.

OhSweetheart bought this gorgeous wooden briefcase from Takumi Shimsmura for her boyfriend, and she says after “after six months of wear and tear it’s still just as beautiful now.”  I love the polished light woodgrain of this briefcase.  It’s very Feng Shui James Bond, wouldn’t you say?

Much like Faux Trophy, Faux Wood can be equally as alluring.  There’s just something about making elements of nature into plasticy manufactured modern objects, like this Ever Together Tyvek Wallet, equally loved by stylish bloggers decor8 and Creature Comforts, and available at GreenerGrassDesign.

Greatest Gift Idea Ever: The Parking Timer Keychain

Posted Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 02:02PM

I’m a little torn emotionally on this one.

On one hand… the sweet vindicating relief I feel from finally being able to stay on top of the evil parking attendants with this Parking Timer Keychain is a delightful Christmas present all in itself.

On the other hand… thousands of dollars, several boots and a couple tows later - I am a bitter, bitter Beep who can only ask herself: “WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS BEFORE????”

Alas, it’s Christmas, and only joyful thoughts abound.  So to compensate for my sad parking misfortune, every city dweller I know shall be receiving this little bundle of joy from yours truly.

And one for every pocket, purse and finger shall I gift to myself.

She loves pink, though the singer is too tough for her.

She’s a girls’ girl.

Gift Idea: Stylish Games with Kate Spade

Posted Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 03:28PM

I’ll admit, I’m a shameless preppy. I also love classic board games and lawn games. Especially if they can somehow incorporate Mint Juleps, Hot Toddies, or Manhattans and of course passed canapés.

If you want to give a little bit of fun this year, Kate Spade has dolled up two classic games: Scrabble and Boules into oh-so-stylish packages that anyone would love.

Stiletto Jungle recommends Boules (here’s the Boules wikii page for a refresher ;) ) in her super chic Oh So Giftable Gift Guide saying “A posh retro game packaged up by the queen of the upper-class American lifestyle makes a fun gift for that uber-fashionable couple on your gift list…Gifting this classy game set shows your worldly good taste and ensures that you will be on the invite list for Saturday afternoon games and cocktails.”

The Jack Spade Travel Scrabble set has been a fave of mine for a few months now.  We all know how hard it is to buy for the boys sometimes, so add this game set to your list.  Great for Dads too!

Gift Guide: Jonathan Adler

Posted Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 02:55PM

Quite possibly one of the most popular darlings of the design world, Jonathan Adler continues to delight us all with his fun, quirky, whimsical modern designs.

Adler’s designs go all over the place…from Christmas Stockings to Menorahs to campy pop pieces and fantastical characters. Price-wise, the range is as broad as his pieces. If you want to make it easy on yourself, choose one designer: Jonathan Adler, and cross everyone off your list with one of his ceramics, pillows, ornaments or tableware.

For classic Adler, I love the porcelain Giraffe object from his Menagerie collection. Being tall, the giraffe comparisons are an easy jest…so I am partial to this elegant Jonathan Adler piece. Partially because I love white, partially because everyone else is so into penguins and giraffes are so statuesque and pretty.

Gift Guide: Culinary Lit

Posted Friday, November 24, 2006 at 01:28PM

The best food writing always makes for a good read, nourishing the mind as well as the body. These are some of the titles I’m hungering for this season, as well as several that have long left a good taste in my mouth.

The goddess of food writing is M.F.K. Fisher, who all but invented the genre. In her works, spanning most of the 20th century, she expresses the human condition through food. I really like The Measure of Her Powers as a sampler, so you can taste a smorgasbord of her work, and whet your appetite for her more substantial books.

The other goddess, Julia Child, had a surprisingly interesting life. She didn’t learn to cook until middle age, and prior to that was in the OSS during World War II. My Life in France covers the period of time when she and her new husband, Paul Child, moved to France, and Julia blossomed in the culinary wonderland.

RISK.jpgTake a look around ThisNext and you’ll see that many shopcasters have a soft spot for a guy named Fred and his super cool designer water.

Just like the groovy square bottle that has people like Fred Wilsono0, and our own Sean Timberlake drinking up; Fred’s FredSpot eclectic blog/website/magazine is equally as charming.

So charming in fact, that Fred put together a list of super cool still-yet-to-be-duplicated classic board games.

So for those of you looking for something charming to wow that despot in your life, look no further than one of the all-time greatest board games ever….RISK

For under $25 your recipient is guaranteed hours, if not days of un-digitized entertainment.  And while the final outcome may cause a temporary rift in the affections of your fellow players (ok, so I hate losing Risk) all involved are certain to have many fond memories and lots of laughs.

Not to mention a confirmed knowledge of who really has the major control issues.
