Anti-Valentines
Posted Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 05:34PMAs I was browsing ThisNext I noticed that LauraSweet shares the Anti-Valentine sentiment and has created a great list I hate Valentine’s Day. Maybe this year I’ll wear black in solidarity with my ThisNext brethren who are single? (by the way if you are single this Vday - hit up a bar… it’s great night to be on the prowl!)

White Castle Valentine's Day
Posted Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 07:55PMSay what you will about their burgers - though it’s a challenge to think of something they haven’t said about themselves already - but White Castle’s branding and marketing departments deserve an award.
As they have done every year for a while now , White Castle will be serving candlelit dinner from 5-9pm on Valentine’s Day, complete with pink tablecloths, the Cupid Crave Kit, and BYOB bottle service - perfect for you and your totally chill significant other (especially if their name happens to be Kumar).
Photos of happy couples are posted to their website (consentually, of course) the next day. There’s nothing more romantic than a cheap date that makes you laugh. Genius!

Silly Valentine Gifts
Posted Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 04:18PMValentine’s Day is around the corner, and if your spouse/ girlfriend/ mom likes to be tickled, then head over to ‘I want one of those’ for some of their Silly Valentines gifts.
Love Stinks Soap: This pink heart-shaped soap bears a true statement ‘Love Stinks.’ I believe sometimes it does! Anyway, this subtly floral scented glycerine soap comes in a small pink presentation box. For $11.00 it might tickle somebody you love.
Giant Inflatable Heart: This depending on who you ask might actually be more romantic than silly. It shows how big your love is for him/ her. Available in an ideal Valentine’s Day color red. $13.00
Klong: This portable cuddle can also be romantic and silly at the same time. It’s made from soft polyester, and stuffed with snugly, squishy stuffing. Ideal for a travel pillow, this baby has weighted hands at the end of it’s long arms so they can wrap around you for a hug. It also has a hospital wrist band. Available in beige. $54.00

(almost) DIY Valentine's Day
Posted Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11:53AMValentine’s Day is just around the corner. You’re serious about this one, so drugstore chocolate in a heart-shaped box won’t cut it, but you definitely want to treat your girlfriend like a lady - problem is, you’re something of a tramp in the financial sector. What to do? Easy; whip up a romantic, DIY-style Valentine’s Day dinner with a twist. This little kit is sure to blow her mind and preserve your wallet - and save you the time it would actually take to do it yourself.
Step 1: Make a date for 2/14.
Step 2: Throw together those unbelievable Barefoot Contessa brownies (clockwise, from left) in the All-Edges Pan (yum).
Step 3: Put the Beach House record on repeat.
Step 4: Switch on a little rose-tinted mood lighting - and yes, that is flowers, candles, and a gift in one (plus hot cheap design - didn’t I see the same thing at Moss for $5k?)
Step 5: Soak in praise.
Step 6: You’re welcome.

Nooka Mirrored Zot V2 Watch
Posted Friday, January 11, 2008 at 09:21AMA super nerdy watch for the super-successful nerd, the sleek little Nooka Mirrored Zot V2 features a minimal mirrored design - and an unnecessarily complex time-telling system. Hours are dots arranged in a three by four grid, the slow-filling bar represents minutes, and the digital display shows seconds - weirdly, the most readable part of the whole watch face …
A toggle will show you the date, as well, and in the old-school nerd watch tradition, you can even set an alarm - but this sleek piece is for the Doogie Houser in your life, not the Urkel (am I dating myself here?).
A perfect V-day gift for the geek in your life who aims to upgrade his way to James Bond status. ($250 at Elsewares)

Madame Fortuna Relic Necklace
Posted Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 10:13PMI first spotted Madame Fortuna’s “Relic” line at a great little shop called Sleep in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and immediately asked the sales lady who designed them. All the Relics are delicate hand-blown glass globes that contain a meaningful object - a Victorian die-cut, a petit-point rose, a scoop of red soil or yellow coral, or my favorite, an exquisite little feather from a robin, peacock, or cardinal.
The prefab pieces are seriously breathtaking, but Madame Fortuna will also custom-make a Relic from the tiny object of your choice - putting an elegant new spin on the time capsule. It’s early to start thinking about Valentine’s Day and all, but I can tell you now that no woman on earth can resist a personalized memento housed in a pretty little sphere - as long as it’s in good taste, of course (hint: not her medication).
From $175 at Etsy.

Is Love in Your Future? Who Needs a Psychic When You've Got Gadgets?
Posted Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 10:15AMValentine’s Day is vexing for everyone at times — whether you’re in a relationship, single, married, or just playing the field. One of the near impossible tasks in life is trying to figure out what the future holds for us, which is why so many people turn to tarot cards, psychics, mediums, spiritualists, palm readers, and, er … bartenders.
However, what if you had a device that could replace all of those (except possibly the bartender) and predict your future? The Fortune Ball uses “the entire Chinese calendar, theories of Astrology, Numerology, I Ching and Biorhythms, once you tell the Fortune Ball your accurate birth date and time (it’s on your birth certificate if you’re unsure of the hour) it will in a jiffy tell you your fortune for any given day up 30 days in advance. It can also tell you retrospectively what the last 30 days were like.”
Additionally, it checks three different areas of your future: health, wealth, and love, and then the laser-etched crystal ball on top glows a different color, letter you know what the future has in store for you. Looking over the product decription, it doesn’t seem like it glows black is the future doesn’t look so bright, but it does glow a dark blue to signify “Supreme Fortune”, which to me actually sounds like a really big Chinese food meal that you’d order for five to six people.
If you’re finding yourself perplexed about love and life leading up to Valentine’s Day, then you might want to try this thing out. Of course, you could always do it the old-fashioned way and visit a real person, but then do you want some complete stranger all up in your business? Keep it discreet, down-low, and high-tech. That’s my motto. If you feel like taking the down-low, low-tech method, then you could always pick up one of those fortune telling fish. He’ll never tell a soul.

V-Day Drama: Induldging in the Dark Side of Valentine's Day (part I)
Posted Monday, February 12, 2007 at 07:55AMI have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day.
Pros:
- everything is pink and red for s spell, which makes the whole world look lovely
- spreading the love is always a good thing
- you are expected to eat chocolate and drink wine with wild abandon
- gifts are a bit more thoughtful and sentimental than at Christmas
Cons:
- flowers become black market items
- everyone (single or matched) runs the risk of becoming horribly bitter at having “love” jammed down their throats
- bad Hallmark commercials interrupt The Office & LOST
- no matter what you do romantically, you’ll probably end up disappointed or in a fight with your mate because you’ve convinced yourself that everyone else you know is doing something more fabulously romantic than you
So, even despite some positive Pro’s, I tend to steer away from Valentine’s Day all-together, except to send notes to fun people whom I really really love like nieces and nephews, my parents, and friends to whom I kind of forgot to send Christmas cards.
Instead, why not indulge that bitter side, and spend the evening…maybe even the whole day… making yourself feel better by watching movies and/or TV shows about people whose lives are pathetically unbalanced.
I give you the V-Day Drama Guide - this edition is all about classic TV shows.
