Watch Wes Anderson

chad's 'wa' picks
So, I’m all excited about Wes Anderson’s 6th film, Fantastic Mr. Fox. I mean, I’ve already seen it, but am still super stoked about it. It’s totally awesome and will easily win the statue for best animated film. It’s occurred to me though that maybe some people aren’t as familiar with the writer/director as they should be. So, I thought I’d remind you. Thus far, he’s directed the above four and Life Aquatic. The best is Rushmore and the iconic is Bottle Rocket, the film that launched his and Owen Wilson’s careers. I think you should see them all though.

ThisNext Maven in Lucky Magazine!

Posted Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 09:08AM

First of all, we’ve got to give major kudos to Laurie March — known around here as Evangelista. She’s the second ThisNext Maven to be featured in Lucky magazine. It’s an honor reserved only for the cream of the tastemaker crop. The West Coast Editor and Laurie chatted about “shopping synergies between beauty and design, color and how it affects our lives, and feeling luxurious in your home,” she said. They also went over some of her favorite products. Check out her blog, to find out more about the experience and the article. Or, jet on over to her Lucky Magazine List, to see the items she mentioned in the article.

The Beach Boys

chad's 'bb' picks
The Beach Boys have been stalking me lately. And, I’m not saying Brian Wilson has pulled a Margaret Mary Ray or something. I’m just saying that everywhere I turn, they’re on the radio or people are talking about them or I see a cool product or whatever. I guess it’s not really all the surprising though. I mean, they are the greatest American pop band, well, EVER.
This post serves two purposes. First is for the casual Beach Boys fans. It’s a bit of guidance saying, own Pet Sounds and own it now! Second is for the already avid, this shirt is amazing. Just saying, like really amazing!

Create Your Holiday Wishlist on ThisNext

Posted Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:09PM

I don’t know if we’re completely ready for it, but I think it’s time to face the facts. Holiday season is in full effect. Sure, this means lots of things (like cold weather, family time, and subpar 80s movies), but mostly, it means gifts — cold, hard presents! Presents, that can go one of two ways. You can either let other people arbitrarily decide what’s cool for you or you can seize control and tell them exactly what you want. We suggest the later. So, it’s about time to get crackin’ on your Holiday wishlist. Check out our wishlist and shopcasting tools, to easily compile and share all your most desired products.

ThisNext Goes Bowling

Posted Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 03:57PM

Every once in a while we leave the confines of our desks to go out and have some real fun. Actually, we have a lot of fun here at ThisNext but sometimes we forget to brag about it publicly. So here we go …

A few weeks back we went bowling in Santa Monica and had a blast. We weren’t the best bowlers in the world (we are clearly keeping out day jobs) but we did managed to have a couple ThisNext employees break 100. Yeah, 100 — jealous?

Friday the 13th

Posted Friday, November 13, 2009 at 02:17PM

Because it is Friday the 13th, its time to recognize all those spooky things like vampires, werewolves and zombies. Hanahula made a great list of books to keep you occupied on this particularly scary day. I must say, since the 2nd Twilight movie comes out in a week, that book has to be my favorite on the list. So make sure you stay safe today and read inside!!

List: Immortally wounded

… eternally obsessed with vampires, werewolves, golems, zombies, poltergeists and other things that do much more than go bump in the night. For those that just cannot get enough goosebumps, here are a few books to keep your pulse racing.

Man Bag Central

Posted Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 01:14PM

I think there’s some major confusion clouding the man bag rule. Like, what’s okay? Are all man bags murses? Am, I allowed to even say the word murse? — probably not. This list, however, bypasses all the hibbity dibbity and merely collects some cool bags that dudes can carry. You know, like to class or to work or to wherever. These aren’t “European Carryalls,” folk. They’re just cool, cool bags.

Oh, and did I mention they’re all cruelty free? Kudos!

This week we get to know a little more about teen and fashion expert, Yietze. Yietze is one of our newer members of ThisNext but has already built an amazing profile for herself. She finds all kinds of unique and beautiful fashion! My personal favorite list of hers, is her oversized jewelry list, it is awesome.

List: Over-sized necklace

Here are some sweet products I discovered at ThisNext. Check them out!

See more of my Over-sized necklace list at ThisNext.

1. Can you write a haiku about you, your blog, or what you do? And/Or in one sentence describe yourself.

I am addicted to fashion and I love vibrant colours expressed in arts. I also like to chill and relax to music, and hangaround with man’s best friends, dogs.

2. What are the last five things you purchased and what is your next dream purchase?

A camera (to capture all things beautiful and most importantly to look back and reminise ), anti aging cream ( in hope of aging gracefully), a pair of Boots (for my upcoming Europe trip), a gold crocodile textured sling bag (everyone should have a little wild side in them), Nylon Japan December (i need my monthly addiction).

3. What is your favorite movie about shopping and why?

I actually have a few favourite movies like The Devil Wears Prada, Coco Chanel and Sex and The City.  I like how they blend and dress up in different designer brands, the colors they used and match, simply drowning myself with all the fashion. If I had to choose between Vogue or a hot meal, it would definitely be Vogue for it will ‘feed’ me a lot better.

4. What has been your favorite ThisNext discovery

Little pony by perlanegra and Union Jack Lips Clutch by Lulu Guinness by fashionistaDIVAgrrrl!

5. Who is your celebrity fashion icon?

Rihanna! She rocks!

6. If you could be any animal what would you be?

Dog because they are faithful, loyal, ever warm and friendly!

7. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

I would want to be cat woman, i love how she looks; hot and sexy. A superpower I would want is the ability to teleport!

Perlanegra likes neat things

Posted Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 10:52AM
I like to consider myself as a sort of music, movies and television aficionado. It’s not that I think I’m the smartest or brightest in the fields. I just know that I have really good taste — unparalleled, awesome, you might say. It’s particular and it’s probably better than yours. So, it’s a rarity for me to find someone that shares this mutual appreciation. Perlanegra does and I’ll definitely be following this list and checking out any new additions. I think you should too.

Be it music, film or TV, they have and continue to make me think and in some instances changed my life.

This week we get to know Girlfromnorthcountry aka Michel! Michel is an handmade expert maven on ThisNext. She always finds new products an all areas of shopping, fashion, food, home, music etc. With her creative lists and detailed recommendations, Michel has become an amazing user of the site! So listen as we get to know her a litte better.

girlfromnorthcountry's recommendations at ThisNext

1. Can you write a haiku about you, your blog, or what you do? And/Or in one sentence describe yourself

dreamer obsessive compulsive happy and delusional

I am a designer for a gift ware company, the Clay Company, and I design with my partner, pewter ‘jewelry for the table. It is small, vintage and nature inspired.

2. What are the last five things you purchased and what is your next dream purchase?

The last things I’ve purchased are, a Schiaperelli vintage crocheted crown, a rosie the riveter military dress, Beatle’s Rock Band Special Edition, Franco Sarto black leather boots and a Target ruffled mini skirt. I would love rag and bone leather maryna jacket.

3.  What is your favorite movie about shopping and why?

I read ThisNext’s blog and I know this is a repeat for sure, but I love ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. I love Meryl Streep and her relationship with Anne Hathaway and the clothes from start to finish and I mean the frumpy ones, too, are amazing in their perfection to show the character changes. So like everyone else, that’s my feel good movie and of course ‘Sex and the City’.

4.   What has been your favorite ThisNext discovery

Just recently it was by another ThisNext recommender, fashionistaDIVAgrrrl, Lulu Guiness’ Union Jack Lips Clutch

5. Tell us a little about how you got started in your business and why you love it!

Its started with going back to art school and when got my first design job as an illustrator for a resort tee-shirt company. That lead to designing wine labels and ‘arty’ labels for ‘wine country’ food products, bookcovers and finally landed a secure positon as lead designer for the Clay Company.  We are really small, do all our design and production in Sonoma County and do all our own product styling, photography and packaging. Now we just have to get a decent looking website!  I still have time to pursue my own design interests and I love just about anything you can put the tag ‘design’ on and try to do it with varying degrees of success.

6. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

I would want to be Sailor Moon, she fights for justice, but gets tripped up a bit on the way, but always makes it work and she looks so cute.

7. If you could be a fruit what fruit would you choose and why?

I am a fruit, but if I had to pick one it would be a cherry, they just taste so good and are like little hearts.

Cool Dog Products

Posted Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 12:32PM
In 1994, I really wanted Chicago Bulls Starter Jacket. What?! Those things were cool in the 90s! I didn’t have the coin though. So, I willed it into existence. I wont go into details, but because I wanted it so badly, it magically appeared. And I assure you, it wasn’t just a sweet treat from ‘ma. It was magic.
As much as I wanted that glorious Starter jacket in 1994, I now want a dog named Woody. He’ll be shaggy, and awesome and watch TV with me and things. We’ll be pals. So, as part of my attempt to will him into existence, I thought I’d share this list of cool dog products.
